Speakers... Budget

Featured Replies

I know this is a topic that pops up quite often, and I have searched and read through loads.

I have a 5 channel Alpine amp installed, currently powering only a subwoofer. The amp claims 80w RMS @ 12v or 120w RMS @ 14.4v (in bridged mode). Looking to install some decent components. I've looked through the usual online stores for car audio, mindful of the mounting-depth limitations of around 60mm.

I've compiled a list of possibilities...

Alpine SPR-60C. 58mm depth. 110w RMS. £150

Focal 165VRS. 56mm depth. 60w RMS. £180

Rainbow CS 265 X-Plain pro. 43mm depth. 80w RMS. £210

Hertz ESK165. 62mm depth (might struggle to fit). 100w RMS £150.

The Alpines are currently my top choice, as they can handle quite a bit of power, and have the biggest mounting-depth within the max available. If the Hertz were a little less deep, I would probably have those top of the list.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of the above, or recommendations for ones I may have missed?

I've been looking for my 3 series for speakers too!

I've ended up opting for the Hertz range - DSK 165 for the fronts and DCX 165.3 for the rear.

You can get those Hertz you're after for a tenner less on eBay FWIW. If depth is an issue, could you not space them forwards a little bit? Or would it hit the door card then?

Yes I think it might hit the door cards at that point. I've read of some people leaving the door cards ajar a little, or cutting out the grille bit on the door card out and doing something more custom. Want to avoid any messing about if at all possible, and looking stock would be nice.

Pretty sure up to 65mm depth will fit iirc (with spacing). Those hertz ones are exactly that according to google . . . .

Reports on this seem to vary. I wonder if it's based on the Golf plastic rings (which allow for 60mm), and there's an extra bit before you hit the door card with the speakers on full blast?!

I would put the splines bottom of that list.

Hertz will probably match true output of your amplifier. Rainbows if you have the budget

I'd say 65mm is going to be questionable. Mine are 62 and sit on the window bar at the back... And speaker chassis surround touches the door card at the front. Assuming a 6.5" speaker.

I bought a set of Focal vrs ones a while ago but they are still in the box... My local car audio specialist (didn't buy them from there) said they were the best solution sound wise for the fabia without a lot of hassle to get things to fit. Not sure I'll fit them though... might be selling the Fabia to get a corrado.

That would seem to rule out the Hertz speakers at 62mm then. I'll bet they vibrate against the door card at full blast?

Forgot another suggestion I have read somewhere is to take the door carrier out, and space the window bar thingy out with some washers. Again something I don't think is a great idea etc.

If the Hertz are off the list, and the SPR's bottom of the pick, in terms of power relative to amplifier it seems the Rainbows are there. They seem a bit pricey and difficult to get hold of though. In fact a Google for them brings up this thread on the first page, lol.
