Diff noise

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I hope it doesn't get any worse but my diff is quite noisy, only at sub 2k rpm when you lift off in gear. I think it is all gears. Wondering how I can go easy on it to get as much life as possible from it and if it does start to go completely or get much worse what should I buy as upgrade? g60 flywheel/clutch at the same time etc.

Will changing the gearbox oil do anything for this? How much would I be looking at for a new diff? I'm not ever going to have silly power (maybe 220 ish) so I don't think I need lsd but if I do work on the gearbox I want it to outlast the rest of the car.

Thanks in advance

I would be very carefull mate, The diff went on mine a few weeks ago with a bang but lucky for me it didnt throw a rivit out of the box which seems to be what they do. I got a second hand box off a car that had done 56k and while that was getting fitted also did the solid mass flywheel change. Car is all happy again

hi Scotty, Any symptoms before it went?

are there any uprated diffs available that are not silly money?

should I go get a box now get the diff bolted and replace before something goes wrong with it? Ideally I would like a box that will stand up to a bit of abuse because I might have to put a towbar on it soon. love the ratios at the minute, possibly a lower first might be no harm. What cars can donate a box? Its a 2002 Octavia rs saloon.

Any help appreciated

The correct box is a O2J EHA for the vrs, to be honest there aint many about. Your best off sticking with the same box its already got, I was advised by guys on here to do the same. What went wrong with mine is I pulled up to a set of light and just before I pulled up to the line the car came to a stop as tho I had hit something. It wouldnt move forward at all but I rolled back. I was lucky enough to get another week then it banged twice making the car jump then made one hell of a awful racket. It was game over so had to sort it out quick. It turns out its a common fault on the VAG gearbox`s for the diff to break down, you could go down the road and get it recon but you need to do it soon or else it will bite you in the bum when you least expect it

I ended up paying £640 all in for everything that was box with 3 months warranty solid mass fly wheel conversion kit from euro, gear box oil from Skoda dealer 2 litres at £13 not bad at all and £100 for a mate to do the job
