Can I change the security coding on flip key ?

Featured Replies

Hi, not sure if the topic title is the right way to word my question so ill try to expand. I bought a used Octavia TDI ambient from a garage a little over 3 weeks ago. When I came to collect the car the garage only had 1 key ( the flip key) they advised that they think the second key was given to them but can't find it but will contact me once they have it and either send it out to me or I could pick it up ( I pass the garage on my way to work). I have called in today as still no key and they have offered to give me a brand new flip.

My question is can the security be recoded so the the missing key will no longer work and my current flip and new flip will work as I'm not happy that there is a key floating around that someone can unlock and drive away my car.

Cheers

Dave

Yes, to recode keys all keys are needed at the sametime. Effectively all keys are deleted and then the existing key and replacement are coded.

This will stop the lost key from starting the car, however the blade part can still be used to unlock the car as a conventional key.

Yes, that can be recoded so that the two keys you're in possession of can only start the car. The immobiliser can be recoded as can the central locking, for remote locking/unlocking.

There will still be another key somewhere that can physically open the car though. But you can't get around that without having all the barrels changed which ends up being quite costly.

Thanks guys, that sets my mind at ease that I can at least stop the car from being driven away. I'll get the garage to recode both keys and immobiliser when I go in later this week to have the new one done.

Would it be worth insisting that they change the barrels of the locks so that even the existing key cannot be used to open the car and issue two new keys to go with the new locks?

They will have to recode both keys anyhow as they all have to be coded at the same time :)

Yeah I'm going to ask about that when I go back but I think I know the response, the conversation I have had with them up to now is that they strongly believe the key is there somewhere it has just been miss placed (although 3 weeks without finding says to me they are not looking very hard)so I'm hoping the law of sod will come into play and they will give me a replacement key only to find the original :)

= 3 working keys. Winning! :)

Tech1e - question, I know that you can cancel the alarm activation by switching on the ignition if you have to use the physical key to gain access, but does that use the imoboliser chip or purely the function of switching on the ignition to live ?

Could be the only security risk if someone has a physical key for the car still ?
