Check Your Garage Security!

Featured Replies

Just a quick post to alert people and remind them to check their garage is secure.

Mine was the subject of an attempted break in last week when some scrotes decide to try and get in to it by ripping the lock out with a sliding hammer. This is despite a house alarm and security lights.

Fortunately they failed but it would appear that they may have been working thier way down the street as I'm aware of two of my neighbours being targetted the same night. The police were called as the scrotes were spotted and hence the Police have a description but there seems little chance of catching anyone.

So - check your garage is properly secure if you have valuables in there (eg a car or bikes / tools etc.).

The Police have advised that the only thing that will put theives off is something that prevents the up-and-over door from being opened at all so I've now beefed things up with an additional high security hasp and padlock anchored to the concrete floor inside the garage that should prevent the door from opening more than about a quarter of an inch.

You have been warned!

These are more of a deterrent but less convenient than the bolts above. This is what the Police recommend.

If you have an alarm, make sure the garage door is included.

The metal on most up and over doors is so thin it can be punctured and the wire to the latch pulled.

Not seen those before - looks to be a good solution provided the frame is in good condition and well secured. If we get fed up with using the padlock I may invest...

Anyone know how to beef up a roller door?

The weak points with roller doors are the side channels. These are usually accessible and if you can bend, cut or dislodge these, then any security is gone.

Secure roller doors lock at both the bottom and top. Electric ones can be very secure as the motor/gearbox effectively locks the top. The side channels are cut into the side walls so they are not accessible and the bottom ends are buried. As with any kind of secure door, the metal is usually stronger and thicker.

My garage is a double so has a big door and the frame is steel so they work very well for me.

When my garage was broken into they got in through the side door which could have done with an additional lock but that wouldnt have made much difference.

When I replaced the roof I also blocked up the side door so they cant get in that way again.

Where's the fun in not having a side door, you can't then sneak in while they are trying to break in the front door, and arm yourself with a paintball gun...
