Insurance Sale Mistake?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've been trying to obtain some decent insurance quotes in preparation for the yeti pickup.

Unfortunately I'll need to start a new policy from scratch as my existing NCD (8yr) is allocated to another car policy (esure) which I plan to keep.

Anyways to cut a long story short, I ended up trying to get an introductory discount thought my mothers Aviva policy as I have been a named driver on this from day one. She has over 5yr NCD on her policy.

Surprising the sale chap offered me a new policy in my name with the full 5 yr NCD as mirrored from my mothers policy due to me being a named driver on this? I was initially quoted 700-1000quid for this!

But whilst on the phone I quickly did an online quote via Aviva for the same 5yr NCD and got 278quid!! I prompt offered him the details of the saved quote for him to review.

For some reason at the time he honoured this price after talking to his supervisor, and agreed to give 5yr NCD as an introductory discount due to being a named driver on my mothers policy for some time.

I clarified this a few times to ensure what I was getting, but was not able to protect the NCD as this was an introductory discount offer. So quickly took the offer without further thought and gave full payment.

I received the online documents and realised the chap had entered the wrong date for a claim on the policy. Phoned back to correct this, and now I've been told that I should not have received 5yr NCD on this policy.

However, I was told that they may still honour this depending on what was discussed during the quotation. Now advised that a supervisor will have to review this and check the telephone recordings as to what was discussed?

Certainly a first, where do you reckon I would stand on this one?

Sounds messy.

Change over to Direct Line. They offer multi car insurance where your 8 years NCD will be applied to both the Nissan and Yeti. Simple and less complicated.

We also offer a matched no claims discount as part of our multi-car insurance deal. If you’re the only person insured on your policy and you purchase a second car that will only be driven by you, we’ll apply the number of claim-free years on your first car to a second or subsequent policy you take out with us. A subsequent no-claims discount is then applied to a second or subsequent policy dependent on these years.

Most reputable companies will let you have a second car on the same NCD terms.

From time to time I have run two cars and I've managed to get good discounts on the second car. I have been with LV for a few years and my YETI quote is £231.

Have you tried the FREE insurance from Skoda? Free for 7 days. They also gave me a quote that was and stayed better than the competition.

As long as it is their mistake, you've already had offer and acceptance under UK law.

UK contract law does make exceptions for genuine mistakes. That said, if you have queried the offer several times and had it confirmed, you have done what you can to be be clear about the terms of the contract, so I'd say stick it to them.

I was referring to the date of the claim as the mistake, which would be a fairly trivial one to go to court over anyway!
