City driving in a CR

Featured Replies

Hi

Love my new Blackline, big improvement on my last car which was also a diesel. When I originally switched to a diesel car 4 years ago I worked 25 miles from home (which included motorway). Now I work 10 miles away and its all city driving -stop start. I appreciated a petrol would have been a more suitable choice given my journey however the Blackline was such a good deal.

Towards the end of my ownership of the last car it started suffering with occasional judder (esp on motorway), it felt a bit rough and had done 50k miles (I had from new). I used normal diesel fuel inc supermarket stuff at times.

I'm aware of the EGR clogging issues on the modern deisel, will sticking to premium (such as Esso VPower Diesel) fuel help keep my carbon deposits to a minimum/ injectors clean? I'm happy to pay a bit extra if its peoples experience this actually helps in regards to this issue?

Any other tips for helping with this?

Booble, am I right in thinking that your last car was a Nectar? If so the chances are that it had a DPF fitted (my 55plate estate did) and the DPF & EGR valve seemed to be the only parts that we didn't have problems with on the car. We sold ours at 45k and it was definitely past its best for smoothness etc.

Any forum will (by its nature) feature some horror stories about the vehicles that relate to it. Just drive the car normally. Remember to take it out for a decent run every so often and don't worry about these issues - they might not happen

Cheers fella, I had a 2008 Vectra CDTI - was a decent enough if bland vehicle, but recent issues pushed me over the edge. I drove that car normally very rarely pushed it (which I suppose didnt help). Towards the end of my time with it, I remember it juddering on entering a motorway so I took it down a gear (4th) and foot down - almost max'd out the revs, a big ploom of black soot was visible in the rear mirror and the car behaved itself largely for the last couple of weeks before trade in (still wasn't 100% but much better).

If using the best fuel helps (as I can't avoid my city commute) I will pay the extra.

CRs are better than PDs for managing to regen but I think you may struggle with city driving.

It's why there isn't a diesel Citigo

I would stay away from supermarket fuel I always use esso in my car ita a vrs aswell and its a taxi .mines an 11 plate had it 1 year now with out a problem

Hi Booble, I have been driving a CR VRS for almost 2 years and do about 6k miles per year. Do a fair bit of town driving in that. Always use V-Power Diesel. Never had the DPF light on or even felt a regen. I also dont drive it hard or do "italian tunups"!. In short, stick with a quality fuel that focuses on clean burning and don't worry about your driving, just enjoy the car, sounds like a nice one you got.

Just a suggestion Booble-

cycle to work (on at least some days), 10 miles isn't that far. I use a hybrid bike and am a reasonably fit 40 year old. I average 12mph so you would get to work in 45mins.

Leave the Blackline at home, save a few pennies, avoid the stop/start driving which isn't good for any car let alone DPFs etc etc.

That way when the weekend comes you can enjoy your car on longer runs. I effectively have a weekend car which makes for a better life all round.

All the best.

I've got a CR140 Scout and my work commute is 18 miles mainly in city and suburban. When not on that run its used to run the kids to school and nursery and touch wood I've had no issues in 2 years and 20k. I've noticed the occasional regen but otherwise no concerns. It does get the odd run but nothing special laid on. I use Shell standard and V-power every now and again. Basically I wouldn't worry about it.

2 years and 20k on my 140CR. Loads of short journeys with a decent run every 2nd weekend and no issues so far.

Been run on Tesco diesel the whole time and never had the light show or any running issues. Do notice an occasional regeneration but it is to be expected.

Thanks everyone for your good advice.

I like your advice BA, I do ride a 12 mile circuit most days (around New Brighton/ Wallasey) to keep fit, I'd love to be able to ride to work but I have the Wallasey tunnel/ toll in the way plus I drop the missus off on the way to work. My average is about 12 mph too so not bad times there mate - I'd love to upgrade to a decent road bike (currently use a Trek mountain bike).

The wife has a Lupo which is ok, but I'd rather stick to my Octy for normal driving. I will use the premium fuel as Queeg suggests and drive normally and not worry.

May change to a petrol Octy in 3 / 4 years time.

Every so often give it a highway run and a bit of boot to get the exhaust hot.

Mine's a 10 month old 125TDI with about 33,000km on the clock.

I've noticed a couple of DPF regens, so far. You can smell them, if nothing else.
