Headliner removal - is roof single or double skin?

Featured Replies

Hi, Ive got a dent in the roof. god knows how it happened - I think it might have either been a heavy cat, a falling stick, or some kid kicking a football. Either way, its annoyed me and I notice every time now.

1st, So, how easy is it to remove headliner? is there a vid or tutorial for octavia II?

2nd Is the roof single or double skinned? - I'm hoping to push from underneath.

Ive been trying a dent puller suction cup. might work with ahairdrier to heat up the metal, but nothing yet. I'm thinking next to try a hot glue gun method or finally getting in' a dent company. Any experiences with roof dents- about size of 50p, let me know.

Thanks

Headliner removal - you need to remove pilars, all the light housings and (if I remember correctly) the "hanging handles" (what are they called? you know the ones girlfriends/wifes grab screaming while you are on a "spirtied run" with the car) are also holding the headliner in place. It's not rocket science, but it's also not a piece of cake 5 minute job. Take a look here: http://elsaweb.spaghetticoder.org/doc/C.en-GB.S00.5118.00/34465144/3

"Jesus" handles we call them.

Coz that's what the person says when they're hanging on to them.

Thanks very much guys.

Awesome and cheers for the link 'Reverse' - Loving your work.

Shame headliner looks such a pain and quite a long job!

Much Appreciated and yes I have grab handles too - they get used even when I'm driving like a saint - gives me a complex. ,

It's not quite as bad as it looks!

The A pillar pulls off easily;

The B pillar does not need the seat belt fixings to be removed for the panel to be moved enough;

The C pillar does need the trim in the luggage compartment to be removed - that's the real faff;

The D pillar also requires the same trim to be removed.

The trim above the boot opening (part 3) pulls straight down on 6 clips;

The light fittings come out easily (a couple of screws in each);

The sun visors are a little fiddly, but fairly easy;

The recessed handles are straight forward.

There is nothing difficult if you are methodical and don't rush.

Having two people to drop the headlining is good advice so as not to bend it. While it's out, you could clean it if, like mine, it's a bit grubby.

Mine will be coming out at some point soon as I have a lot of wires to run across from the rear of the roof to the back of the dash.

to get at the shark fin antena from underneath as it is loose do I have to take all the headliner down on my octavia or can I just lower the rear part

You don't even need to do that......just remove the plastic trim at the top of the boot opening and you can slide your hand up above the headlining to get access to the base of the antenna. It's a bit fiddly, but I replaced my antenna easily enough using this method.

Had a dent in the roof of my last car (2005 Honda Civic Type-S) that was caused by the fist of an anti-English Frenchman who did the same to a total of 18 UK cars in the car park of a French supermarket.  The roof had a sheet of  fibre soundproofing/anti-drum fixed to its underside.  This sheet was  compressed and distorted by the blow and that meant it had to be replaced before the dent could be removed.  I didn't bother.  When I changed to the vRS dealer didn't drop his trade-in offer when he saw the dent!

As required by EU law -

many thanks for the info, I will have a go , I thought I would have to somehow undo all the rear headliner.  roller door came down and took it off so needs re-fitting
