Dealer using wrong oil?

Featured Replies

I've just picked my car up from Border Cars Skoda after having a full service today, on the print out which breaks down the parts and items used it says Shell Helix Ultra AG 5w30 4.3 litres - Just done a search online and I don't think it even has any VAG approvals let alone the correct one for the PD engines! So this isn't the correct spec oil for the car I take it?

If it isn't correct drive the car as little as possible preferably not at all

and demand a flush and replacement oil at the correct spec asap.

Your engine will NOT like the wrong oil.

Thanks - I'm nearly 100% certain it is the wrong oil, quite peeved off to say the least! I'm off to Scotland on Wednesday so it'll need changed tomorrow so i'll be on the phone first thing. How they managed that is beyond me as a main dealer, my first time there and deffo my last, Interesting to hear what they say tomorrow....

That is helix longlife fully synthetic oil the same as castrol longlife fully synthetic oil

The best oil u can use on the PD engine ;)

Can be used for 10k or 20k service intervals

So no its not the wrong oil

5w30 is 5w30... why would a dealer even be able to get hold of the wrong spec oil??

Sounds to me like they have the newer spec hense the slightly diff number..

Obviously the dealer has a more uptodate spec list than a thread on here ;)

The important numbers are 5w30... this means its fully synthetic longlife oil... so it is the right oil

I'm told that stuff is the best oil for everything, it's damn exspensive though

No sorry mate, the PD engines require a very specific standard of oil - the grade 5w30 is correct however it isn't approved to VW 505 01 or 507 00 so is not suitable for the 1.9 PD 130 - or it will eat the cams & lobes.

So what skoda engine do u think they will be using/ stocking this oil for??

U will find the 507 00 number will be on the bottle of the shell helix ag 5w30 longlife oil they have used.

Im guessing they havent put another number different to 507 00 on ur bill ;)

I would certainly go to the dealer and question the oil they have used. I can remember reading on here that some dealers use the correct PD oil, but write something different on the invoice.

As you can see from that sticky thread for oils, the vRS required oil to VW 505.01 normally 5W-40. However you can use long life oil meeting 507.00 (5W-30) which exceeds this 505.01 spec.

I'll be back up to the dealers in the morning to query the oil used, if it is the Helix AG then it's not the correct spec and hopefully they will change the oil & filter ASAP or i'll buy some correct oil and they can refund me the oil cost back from the bill.

AG meets the GM (Vauxhall) standard

AV meets the VAG standard

Yeah General Motors approved, Shell Helix AG on the invoice - baffles me why they would use that?!

Yeah - I have found a few threads on here where the oil quoted on the invoice was incorrect but the correct spec was used in the vehicle, I'd like to see the container of the oil used for more piece of mind so I knew the dealer was telling the truth.

It's likely the tech used the right oil, and the invoice is wrong. If they don't change the oil, get the sevice manager to write the oil they did use on the invoice and initial it.

I'll be finding out soon when I get myself sorted, your probably right as I doubt a Skoda dealer would stock the Shell AG ultra when it states on the bottle for General Motors - then again where would they get the name from to put on the invoice? If it was Shell Ultra AV-L then this is specific for VW engines meeting 504/507 00 spec.

£8.00 per litre x 4.3 on the invoice

Treat yourself to a Haynes manual, trolley jack, axle stands, and a basic tool kit, torque wrench etc all for christmas...........

.........and save yourself lots of worry, stress, etc.......... B)

If you want a job doing properly...............do it yourself........

Well after having a dispute with the service desk and technician we finally agreed that it was the wrong oil for the PD engine. At first they told me that the 5w30 Helix AG is the oil they use in all Skodas and Mitsubishi's (double franchise), I told them that it is not the correct oil and I want the oil changed for that of a correct spec - the guy disappeared for 10 mins and I could hear him having a convo on the telephone, he then came back and explained they will change the oil & filter at no extra cost using Shell Ultra Extra 5w30 long life 507 spec - I asked to see the oil much to his surprise lol it was in a big drum in the workshop, not quite sure why they didn't use this oil in the first place!!

:o You'd think they'd know better really wouldn't you...

Glad you got it sorted

Result then.

Very worrying though! How many people haven't bothered to check their receipt and are driving round with the wrong oil in the engine!

Phil

Wow.. Never known a main dealer stock more than 1 spec of longlife oil :-/... bit of a wierd one.. must be because they were a joint with another manufacturer..

We have longlife and castrol gtx + the longlife goes in everything except 1.4 and 1.2 petrol normally aspirated engines on Time + Distance service regime.

They'll be loads of PD engines driving around here then with wrong oil in because I'm sure that not every customer will look at the invoice and check the correct oil has been used - Or even know what the correct spec is.

Border cars has been open 12 months so it's quite a new dealership but still they should know the exact specification of oils set by the manufacturer?! The fact he said to me ''the Helix AG is the oil they use in all cars on the time + distance service regime'' ''Skoda & Mitsubishi'' is a give away that he was clueless over the correct oil - I had to tell them it MUST be VW 505 01 or the later 507 00 spec for PD engines or I can kiss goodbye to my cams & lobes etc! So my first experience using this garage for servicing hasn't really got off to a good start......Cars back in next Tuesday to have a fog light and the bottom intercooler pipe to the turbo changed.

Glad it's now using the Shell Helix Ultra Extra - Probably one of the best oils available atm.

i've just purchased quantum platinium 5w40 but i've also got longlife 3 5w30, bought the later as good offer on oil/filter and sump lug. both ok to use on pd engine, true people don't check invoice properly they assume that the dealer knows the score. always quiz if unsure.

Ahhhh, another story that makes me sooooo thankful I use Unit 18! Glad you got it sorted though.
