Monte Carlo Parker Review-Change the suspension!

Featured Replies

Taken from a Parkers review I found... I don't a any problem with the suspension on my Monte Carlo, maybe a tad lower would be better but certainly no ''horrendous bangs''!!! Imo any car running on 40 series low profile tyres is going to be a hard(er) ride, no mention of this!!

''Have you had any problems with the car?

Nothing has gone wrong with it per say. However the suspension that comes standard with the car is very very poor, slight bumps and shallow pot holes on the road make a horrendous bang where any other car i've ever owned would roll over the same area without incident. I went as far as having the whole suspension changed to a Bilstein B12 Pro-Kit Suspension Kit, the outlay was expensive but worth it.''

Mine scares the crap out of me regularly - to the point I now swerve (if safe to do so) away from potholes. A proper crash, felt through the whole car, not just a wheel donk.

I am beginning to wonder if it is doing some sort of damage - the roads around here are pretty bad and I have to travel down unclassified roads (barely 2 cars wide, forced into subsided edges by oncoming traffic) every day.

Another thought was whether something was wrong with the car - it's as if it's hitting the bump stops, as yes, thin profile tyres, but they're wide, so should roll over, rather than a jarring crash.

I wouldn't recommend trying to replicate it - but it is certainly there.

As far as I can see, lowering it would make it worse. I have no issues with roll or anything else, just poor ride in certain conditions.

I pulled into a car park with two friends in a couple of weeks ago and heard what sounded like the bump stops, it wasn't pretty but only the first time I've heard it.

I do avoid pot holes anyway after seeing the damage they can do but other than that the ride is comparable to my old Astra SXI.

I have heard bangs but on in extreme situations ie not notice pot holes or hit quite vicous speed bumps too quick ,

But on the hold its pretty much the ride you would expect from a car with a sports set up.

And id say body roll is minimal :)

low profile tyres on monte dosn't help either

where did you buy then kit from and did it affect your warranty?

Interestingly, I saw an old Top Gear yesterday (it was on as I flicked through channels). The one where Clarkson rags a Twingo 133 Cup, ends up jumping into the Irish Sea...

He said the ride on the 17" wheels and low pro tyres is abysmal and crashes over potholes and speed bumps... sounds familiar...

It is properly annoying me now - I can't avoid the crap surface on all of my driving and it sends a crash through the whole car (and I mean a crash, not a subtle thump). I have visions of the airbags going off, wheels being dented, alignment being shot...it is always the nearside front wheel.

I don't find it to bad considering its got sports suspension and low profile tyres on, though when I was younger did have a Vauxhall Nova with 60mm drop and low profile tyres on also a Vauxhall Cavalier with 60 mm drop and low profile tyres, now they were a hard ride and had to avoid pot holes and virtually stop for speed bumps or risk ripping off the stainless exhuast or ripping off the front bumper.
