windows 8?

Featured Replies

Can't believe there's no thread on this on the day that they launched win 8. So I bought a new PC in the last two months so I'm entitled to a £24 upgrade to Win 8 Pro. Anyone used it? Is it worth doing? This is my main work PC so I have to live with the OS every day. Don't want to make the change and then find I hate it!

I dont really get it to be honest. From what it sounds like you have to use the windows store for software. I dont really understand backwards compatability etc. For example, I use macromedia dreamweaver mx...will it work. Don't know. Or the Sims 2 or 3...

I have had it downloaded for a couple of weeks just not got around to trying it yet!

Hope to have look on Monday if it's quiet so will let you know.

I did have a very quick look at server2012 and it is a big change but had to flatten the server for 2011sbs to be ready to go out.

I have been running this on a virtual machine for a few months now and If i were you I would stick with Windows 7.

The reason people are not raving about it is Microsoft are releasing Windows too often now - Nothing really changes.

The best Windows release was XP - This release made so much difference.

Anyone remember windows 95 - 98 - Thinking back how un-secure was this OS, if you password protected your machine you could press ESC on login anyways meaning an account were always active for virus's to run.

Nothing exciting to see. Stick with 7.

stick with wot i've got then ?

is it worth having if you have got a touch screen PC?

Mmm....kind of what I was thinking. I downloaded the upgrade today on a new laptop. Its a basically a new skin on top of Win 7, which looks very Apple-esque but still performs as it was,

I have a mate who has his own computer shop and he said stay away from Windows 8 for a few months until all the bugs have been worked out.

For the first time ever I've bought a disk copy of Windows. I got 7 64bit but there's no way I'll get 8 anytime soon. Seems all touch-screen driven which would mean to get the most out of it you'd need a touchscreen too.

The problem with Windows 8 is Windows 7. What is the incentive to move unless you have a touchscreen?

Same as XP was good enough to ruin Vista and make the Win7 launch very hard for MS.

They'll sell W8 but only OEM on new kit.

I upgraded on friday.. the upgrade process was easy and painless.

Not sure what all the fuss is about - given 15 mins to find my way round the new UI and its fine.

Its definitely faster then 7, and ive not run into any compatibility issues.

Only really worth it if it already comes with Windows 8 or if you have a touchscreen PC/Tablet.

Had a play on some machines at currys the other day. Pretty rubbish on a normal PC with mouse.

^^^^^

Exactly, however it wont be long before all PC's / laptops will have touchscreen.

Thats when it will become a necessity.

True.

It was amazing to see how many people were tapping and prodding the screen of normal monitors and laptop displays that didn't have touchscreen on. People just seem to expect it especially now with windows 8 looking the way it does.

Phil

Dump Metro and use a traditional Shell and it is OK.

Not sure how it will take off in a business environment though, fine if you are on a touch screen device like a tablet.

If it detected if you are on a touch screen device and only install Metro on touch interface devices and a traditional Shell UI on non-touch devices it would be fine.

Paul

Just installed it, I like it, mostly.

Metro UI just replaces the start menu for me as I just use desktop mode.

Cool can't wait to sue the office for making me lean across the desk every 30sec. Touchscreens aren't appropriate everywhere.

Unless its a tablet or touch screen - dont waste your time!

I agree, some will buy into the hype though, others will be forced by OEM hardware bundled Windows 8.

Paul

Its worth it for the new task manager alone.

And the new BSOD screen
