Odd things happening on my PC

Featured Replies

In the last couple of days when I start my PC it now comes up with the choice of operating system (no use as I only have one) and the password window is full when it starts so I have to hold down the backspace key to empty it so I can enter the correct one.

I decided to perform a system restore to 20 days ago and this has got rid of the system choice on startup but the password box is still full

BUT when I did the system restore a screen flashed up for a split second with writing on it only saw one bit of it and it said " it's dead jim" ......any ideas anyone....pc seems to be working ok apart from that.....I just have a feeling something is not right....defender comes back clean as does Avast scan

I don't have a log on screen on my PC (don't see the point as no-one else uses it.) This is achieved by only having the default administrator account and setting no password - PC boots straight to the desktop.

Might be worth change your password - but leaving the "new password" box empty. Not 100% sure if this will work but worth a try.

Go to start menu click run, type control userpasswords2 in the box and press okay. A window will appear where you can reset password and select a default log on account.

have you installed a windows manager proggie recently? like yamicsoft?

regardless id recommend a malwarebytes scan as its better than defender imho

Malwarebytes in SAFE MODE would be advisable, you obviously have some infection.

I have now run a malwarebytes scan and it says all is ok...just going to reset password and then try again

McCafee do a piece of sortware called stinger, it is intended for proffessional users. It is intended to deal with recent difficult infections. It is free and was recommended to me a few years ago by the IT department at work, it is worth a try.

Copied from "hijackme" no doubt.

If MWB found nothing .... it is either good news or VERY bad news; the things that can avoid MWB tend to be very nasty and difficult to remove. Have you opened your bootlog and had a read to see if you can find the "it's dead jim" reference??

If you havent got one, you can set the pc to create one from the same menu you select "Safe Mode" from.

The boot and password issues seem to have been sorted now, but there is a sound from the pc on startup that sounds like an annoyed grasshopper (fast chirping noise for 2 or three seconds and again for a second) just hope it's not the hard drive about to pack up

Seagate disk test /Powermax ,both from Seagate will help on that. ( Both FREE downloads)- to either a self booting floppy( if you've got a MB with Floppy) ,or self booting CD.
