Superb 2.0TSI Elegance - 8 months and 9,000 miles

Featured Replies

I'd planned to post some thoughts on running my Superb 2.0TSI for six months, but better late than never!

The Superb replaced an Octavia vRS TFSI, which I'd run from new for almost five years. I loved the Octavia but couldn't get excited about a like for like replacement. I'd test driven a Superb 2.0TDI 170 Elegance and been very impressed, but wasn't doing the mileage to justify a diesel, so when the 2.0TSI was launched it could have been made for me and with 0% VAT and 0% finance I couldn't see anything else like it for the money.

9,000 miles in eight months after averaging 10-11,000 a year in the Octavia says it all really. I've found myself taking the car on trips where I'd previously gone by train because the Superb is just such a nice place to spend time. Its so much quieter inside than the Octavia.

I'm new to DSG, but I'd say I'm a convert. I'm happy to leave it in D around town. Most of the time the car is better than I am at knowing when to change gear, and safe overtaking is effortless in S mode - the memory of a glorious multi-vehicle overtake on the Thetford to Watton road last month still makes me smile. But when it gets twisty, manual mode comes into its own, as left in D the car often wants to be in too high a gear to make rapid progress. It is no sports saloon, but a great compromise between performance and refinement.

Even with DSG, I'm getting better fuel consumption from the Superb than the Octavia - typically 37mpg cruising on the motorway at 70-80 mph, and I had no problem bettering 40mpg when I had time to spare driving the M6 from Manchester to Coventry and kept the speed down to 60.

Unlike some, I've found the seats in the Superb comfortable enough - and that's based on several 6 hour / 300 mile plus driving days on a recent road trip to southern France. But there's something not quite right about the driving position - I feel as if I'm sitting too close to the centre of the car rather than directly behind the pedals.

Finally I'm really happy that I went for the Luxon Anthracite wheels. I'd had the Zeniths on my silver vRS refurbished in dark chrome, and wanted to keep the silver car with dark wheels idea. I've not seen another Superb with these and its great to have a car that looks a bit different while remaining OEM.

The photos below from our trip to France show the look of the wheels nicely

Great photos.

I have 2.0 170 tdi dsg and the car and gearbox never fail to impress me to.

I reckon those that say the estate version is the better looking version are just kidding themselves, nice wheels :)

Really glad to hear you're enjoying your superb Mike. Your Octavia has been faultless since I bought it from you! It's a credit to you. Got around to giving it it's winter protection the other week. I popped a thread up in the styling and car care section if you fancy a look to see how she is doin. I really fancy a superb like yours, looks great. Will definately be looking at them when it's time to replace the Volvo.

Thanks for the update on the Octavia Neil. Good to know that it has served you well. I've seen your styling and car care thread and she is looking great. Also reminded me that the Superb is now badly in need of some similar TLC. It has been a mad year with little time for car cleaning, but after spending most of the summer in London I'm now back in Norfolk and looking for a new project, so no weekends to work for a while and no excuses left!

I bet you had a busy summer. Hope all the hard work you put in towards the very successful event was worth it and it all went well for you. From the reports on the news transport wasn't an issue which is great! I'm sure the superb will come up a treat. It looks great from the pictures in France.

While I'm on here I thought I'd do a quick winter update. I'm now up to 11,000 trouble free miles in just short of 10 months.

With the cold weather here we are loving the heated seats - the one thing I missed from the Honda Accord SE Exec that came before the Octavia.

I'm also happy that I specced the heated windscreen. The Superb doesn't suffer from the condensation on the inside of the windscreen on cold mornings that I had on the Octavia, but we've had a few frosty mornings recently and having a completely clear screen in seconds rather than minutes is great when I'm cutting it fine to make the London train.

We had a few interesting moments, but overall it went really well with some great feedback from our client and customers. It was a real team effort and very satisfying to play a part in it. We were hoping the sport would make the headlines and not what we were doing. All those GB gold medals might have helped a bit!
