Are all PD TDIs wired up the same?

Featured Replies

Would one PD unit happily sit in the place of another? Nice easy question this I hope. And I mean the whole thing, block, box, shafts, HUBS, etc. Also, if I did swap engines, what might be the repecussions of using existing ECU/remap? Any help gratefully received.

You're determined to swap as much stuff as possible on Furby #2, aren't you? :D

Jason, have you considered getting an FMIC then going for remapping again, or see if a hybrid turbo is available? This may get around the injector issue to an extent and you should still see some nice power gains :D

Also do you still have the standard exhaust or a BlueFlame/Milltek with Cat and Downpipe? supposidly they are worth 10-20 lb/ft and 5-10 bhp.

Jason.. just get shut of it and get a RS.. coz thats wot your after.

I told him that as well.........be cheaper in the longrun

All I need is a "yes" or "no, you need to be aware of....A, B, & c)" :D And to tell me that the vRS is cheaper is just not the case - you're talking about me needing to find 6 grand to be able to afford one, and then there's the higher group insurance too.

I have someone who could easily fit the engine for me, as long as I'm fully in the know about technicalities. (eg: same engine mounting spots? All wires going to my engine now, will be same on a 130? 6 speed box will be OK with my existing gearbox cabling? (when I don't have headlight covers in them ;)) edit: and the mapping issue of course. Might be one to ring Jabba about that.

Get the picture? No more of this, you want a vRS malarky. I just want an individual car of my own design, and enjoy it. Going back to "standard" again would be gutting.

Has anyone done one? Answer probably no so all your going to get is peoples guess work or views on it.

But as far as i cant tell yes a 130 engine would fit in a 100 car but there is alot that needs to go with it, gearbox, shafts, dash insert, ECU, wiring etc

Any reason the current ECU can't tell the 130 engine what to do?

Didn't think the 130's dash panel & ECU would be a part of it, but I assume if I need them, they'll just plug into my existing wiring, which I'd imagine is pretty much identical.

I would think you could probably use the exsiting wiring loom. At worst wha woul dhappen is you may have some missing data bus wires possibly. But you could pretty much tell which ones as they would give a fault code.

You may be able to overwrite you engine ECU with a moddified 130 code to suit the new engine, but the base program for your engine will be different ot that of a 130. A remap doesnt rewrite everything, only certain areas and an engine ECU does alot more than run your engine these days. There maybe certain differenes in things like the EGR and N75 valves, do you have individual ones or the black box on the turret?

But the simple mechanics of it would be reasonably straight forward and I think the gearcables should be the same for 5 and 6 speed.

Thing which would worry me is that you'll end up spending thousands to get it to the same (or better) spec against the vRS, and then you've modded it so much the insurance will be creeping up too, doubt the original low level of the PD100 insurance is really that much lower post-modding?

If you do manage to dump a PD lump in there just consider one of the issues that you have with not buying VRS, the insurance! You may find that a modified motor, especially one with a bigger lump up front will attract higher insurance premiums, you may well be surprised and the outright buy of a VRS may well work out cheaper and with a hell of alot less hassle, 'Go for it'

Jason

You have obviously done the maths on this ( haven't you ? ) , and what you are doing will be significantly cheaper once all has been taken in to account.

Or, is it once you've done this, you are going into the business of customising Furby's ? ;)

BTW Good luck, I hope this project works out for you, just think of the experience :)

You'll be wanting a 1.8T conversion next J - Oops did I really say that :sofahide:

I can't believe for any time at all that a PD100 with a PD130 engine is going to be cheaper to insure than a manufacturer standard vRS. I think you must be kidding yourself there, Jason.

From the insurer's point of view - would you see it as lower risk to insure a car which is as fast (probably faster!) than a standard vRS but which has been hand rebuilt with lots of non-standard components, or one which is straight from the factory and has been designed as a unified concept?

I don't think there is any question of not getting humped over the insurance but as J says he wants an individual car.

Perhaps not everyones idea of a good move (I don't think so myself) but I think he should be supported for his efforts and his questions answered where possible.

Sure if I happen to have some useful info (not all that likely ) I'll drop it in no problem :D

If you were to fit the engine however you'd end up having to uprate suspension too as the front would be a lot heavier I'm guessing :D

I suspect J's coilovers should be able to cope with the extra weight :D Personally, I'd be looking at getting a better engine than the PD130 if I was looking to go to all the hassle of engine swapping........

Chris

 forgot about those coilovers :D - not gonna drop much lower as otherwise you wouldnt be able to get over a patch of mud on the road

Although dropping in say a 1.8T would sound nice, that would really make it a different car - I'm guessing you'd have to rip out the whole lot including the fuel tank & the inlet to it. Not a clue what the rulez are for that :D

Would the PD150/160 engine fit the bay?

AFAIK Jason has a PD100, and I was under the impression they were fundamentally identical engines, with differences being in things like turbo, ECU and cooling? I'd try to keep as much of the new engine ancilliaries as possible, as well as the clocks and ECU, just to be on the safe side and to ensure 100% compatability.

Take the opportunity to get a MAXI DOT display too! It'd be nice to see some blue clocks too. Keep up the good work and keep us up to date!

Correct on all accounts. It sounds a fair bit easier to drop in the whole lump, and just plug in the ECU and dashpod to ensure necessary immobiliser type passes, when starting up. ;) Would need the donor car's reg / 4 digit immob code though if further VAG com works were needed... Oh, hang on, it'll be on the back of the instrument panel!:rofl:

Aside from that, same wiring (earths same, wires for "extras" should be the same (turbo, alternator, etc) so I reckon if I take a lot of piccies of the wetup before removal of pd100, it should be all OK. And, there's always expertise I can call up, given doubt.

Sounds like a monster job - good luck :D

. Oh, hang on, it'll be on the back of the instrument panel! .

Wont be on a vRS, they stopped doing that a while back. Also its only usually printed on a replacement dash insert not the original.
