Sainsburys city diesel

Featured Replies

Went to sainsburys with the intention of filling up, but all they had was 'city diesel'.

What is the difference and would it do any harm in the blt engine of my fab vRS?

Filled up at Tesco just to be safe anyway.

Probably just branding. Check the fuel standards if you want to be sure.

BS EN 590:2009

For derv

Yep, just Sainsbury's branding for their standard diesel.

Weird branding really, but there you go. It does work perfectly well for use in the country as well ;)

It said ultra low sulphur, low emissions, so I presumed "more **** in it instead of sulphur"...

All derv has had to be ULSD for years now.

As long as whatever you put is in BS590 you'll be fine :)

I've used it many times with no problems.

Don't morrisons call theirs something similar?

They must do it to make people think they are getting something special...

Phil

It'll be fine, except that performance and economy is crap compared to Shell, BP etc as they don't have the same additives.

Possibly my one, but it makes little difference whether it's run on Shell/BP/Esso /Texaco standard diesel or some from the supermarkets.

Morrisons is just Diesel. At least it is in my petrol station. Also, it turns out that the supermarket fuel isn't necessarily rubbish. I don't know about all supermarkets but the stuff we get comes from Conoco, Texaco, Shell or Esso. I know this because our delivery notes state where it was loaded into the tanker and where it comes from.

Sainsburys were an early pioneer of ULSD, introducing it a few years before anyone else (in about 1996 I think) so they branded it 'City Diesel' to differentiate it from the standard sulphur diesel everyone was selling at that time. They even used to charge a couple of pence per litre more for it over standard diesel in the early days.

Standard diesel was then banned for road use in the UK and replaced by ULSD, so in effect 'City Diesel' became the new standard diesel that all filling stations now have to sell by law. Sainsburys still call it City Diesel, despite it being the same stuff everyone else now sells.

My mpg goes down and it drives like 1.0 engine with that sh*te in.

Still the same basic petrol/diesel as everyone else gets ...just that for supermarkets etc they don't put the additives in that shell/texco/bp do

If you say so.

At the end of the day BS EN590 specifies minimum additive packages too, so they'll going to have some at least.

Heard people say this before, but personally never noticed any difference in mine.

Usually always try make it to a Shell though, but when there's a 3p/litre difference for driving round the corner in Edinburgh, I'd rather take my chances on supermarket own brand. Although Shell I'm on about has now pretty much matched the supermarkets, so it's all good.

Filled up in Sainsbury's yesterday. Interestingly some of the poumps had 'City Diesel' whilst others had 'Diesel'. I assume that they are rebranding gradually.

Rob.

Sainsburys diesel has always been called City Diesel at my parents local Sainsburys since it was introduced quiet a few years ago now.
