How to change oil

Featured Replies

Right so ive bought an oil.filter and 5 litres of quantum oil. Im wondering should I have a go at changing the oil myself, as ive never done this before. Is there anything else I need? I live on a slope so is the bonnet best facing uphill or down?

What are the steps I follow to change the oil and whats the best thing to catch the oil in? Thanks

Easy! did mine last night after work.

Dont forget to do your sparks too if they havent been changed in a while. (and Gap them)

Use flat ground not on a hill as you have to raise the front of the car to get to the sump plug anyway.

New Washer/Plug is advised, I normally do the filler cap aswell if its old.

Got an old washing up boal?? they are handy to catch oil.

also dont forget the oil filter is full so it gets very messy, Might be worth getting a filter removal tool as if its on tight you wont be able to get it by hand as its in an awkward place.

If you havent done it before and are a little unsure, find a mechanic friend to come and give you a hand just so you are doing everything right, like dont tighten the filter too tight, Some people prime the filter with oil (i half fill it before fitting, not essential)

Make sure you have the plug back in and the filter back on before topping back up, have known ppl to forget to put the sump plug back in and it ended up very messy :giggle:

Once your done, warm it up, Let it cool and then check the level again, Top up if required (this is why i prime the filter, Less second top up required  )

Could do the air filter at the same time, And also if the coolant has not been done in a while then could drop that and do that aswell??

Thankyou

I think I saw somewhere in here (Briskoda that is) someone just taking a screwdriver, make a hole in the oil filter, and then unscrew it. Do NOT do this unless someone else says so too ;)

I have done that before  was on a classic mini so plenty of room to do it..... the Octy Vrs dosent have enough room to swing the hammer to get the driver in :giggle:

I used one of these

Worked better than the strap style ones.

dont over tighten the sump plug either, the sump is ally so it wont like you going nuts when you tighten it back up,just nip it up...if you dont have a new sump washer its not the end of the world...you will get away with the old one...if you have'nt done the pick up in the sump it may be a good time to do that to???

If you have SAI still on then filter can be abit of a pain especially if tight,

As said above having a strap will come in handy, either that or a big set of water pump pilars

I have one of these which is perfect for removing stubborn filters.

I also use these sometimes to.

As metioned oil change is easy

Don't worry if your car is on a slope. (mine is and i change mine no worries) I would have front facing upwards if you have a slope as then the oil can flow backwards towards the sump plug. Just check oil level when on level ground. Car takes approx 4.5 litres if a VRS.

You need to remove the under tray to get access to sump plug and filter.

As mentioned removing filter can be tight and also messy so place washing up bowl or similar under sump plug and a lower level tray under filter to catch oil.

When you refit oil filter fill it up first with a little oil to help prime engine and also smear a little oil over the filter rubber seal to make removal easier next time. Then tighten filter up by hand

It really is simple

got mine down to 10 minutes, dipped and checked, in fact done it so many times i dont need to dip it anymore, only between changes

Good spot bowaders forgot to mention that smear...

uff ... changing the oil, that's a tough one :whew:

up there with washer bottle filling, and, tyre inflation

Might be an idea to do the level check on level ground though, eh! ;)

This..... you do have holidays from brisky sometimes but come back for the info...

Top tip for you

Before removing the oil filter get a flat piece of card and wedge it inbetween the oil filter housing and the block. Then when you undo the filter and the oil runs out it will go down the card instead of the block and make a mess.

Couldnt do it myself.

Yes you could, given the right tools and a little guidance. As could everybody. A little confidence is all it takes.

My fave is..... Have i got a spare 4-5 hours? F**k it lets give it a go.... normally goes well... and if it dosent and i get stressed then 5 min break with a cuppa and a calm down then get back to it, get it done in no time.

Can anyone confirm whether this will work on the diesel engine oil filter? I mean where the filter is only a paper element under a plastic dome at the front?

Tom

yes it will, bit i recommend using a cloth around it first then the tool cos they crack. Can i suggest using a tool of the same principle but uses a canvass strap instead.

Once undone, on the diesel anyway i replace the seals and only do it up hand tight.......never got stuck again, and never leaks

PD lump filters are easy. just use a socket on it.... they have put the hex top on it to put a socet on it. cant remember what size though.
