Oil level, oil light and topping up?

Featured Replies

My car is due for its third service this year on saturday, I get it done every 10-12k. Now yesterday morning my oil level light came on first thing in the morning, the car was parked on a slope and up on a kerb. I moved the car 100m down the hill onto flat and keyed off/on only for the oil level light to go off.

Now, when I got to work and checked the oil level at lunch (engine cold) there was an oil mark just under the min level, but also seemed to be on the sphere like marker above the narrow 'neck'.

Can anyone confirm exactly what the oil level/mark should level like just so I am 100% sure. Feel like i'm going mad when i look at the damn dipstick!

Secondly, the car is booked in for its service in 200miles time, with the oil possibly on the min level can it be risked 200 miles of careful driving?

Cheers guys :)

Is it really worth the risk for the sake of ten quid's worth of oil! That is the price of 7 litres of diesel that you burn every 80 (?) miles.

Fair point as always, put in 750ml to take it up above minimum to keep me going. Better safe then sorry :)

Oil level within range 'a'

– You must not top up the oil.

Oil level within range 'b'

– You may top up the oil. It is possible that the oil level may then

be within range 'a' after doing this.

Oil level within range 'c'

– You must top up the oil -> page 252. It is sufficient, once this

is done, to keep the oil level is within range 'b'.

Just put in enough oil to get it above the minimum and a little bit.

FWIW if you're really cost worried, if you don't have a DPF then you can use a bit of the cheaper fixed life oil for the top up as your service will be very soon.

Personally I'd just buy a 5L pack of VW504/VW507 compliant oil and use a tiny amount of that.

It's one litre between the min and max levels IIRC
