Loosing MPG & whining noise before boost

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have had a look on the search however can't seem to shed light on an issue i'm currently having.

Recently my Fabia VRS has lost MPG and averaging around 25 on small runs and 40 on motorways whereas before i could easily achieve 60mpg... I have noticed that the car smokes more than it use to and when i put my foot down a whinning noise starts from 1.5k revs onwards before the turbo makes it's whistle. I can hear the whining noise inside the car and at first thought it was the speakers. I have had the pipes under the bonnet sprayed to see if anything is leaking which there are no signs of.

Would anyone know what the problem is likely to be? performance wise, the car seems pretty much the same and isn't struggling to pick up speed.

The car has been mapped around 6k miles ago and the car is on 67K miles with FSSH

Check all of your boost pipes again.

Sounds like it's leaking somewhere.

Hmm thats what i thought. Really worried that it's the turbo as will be a big expense that i currently can't afford...

I've checked the big pipes on the left hand side of the engine, am i missing any?

Did you check them all the way to the intercooler and back to the turbo?

IC cracked?

Bottom intercooler pipe to the turbo? Just had mine replaced after excessive wear was highlighted as an advisory on the service last week. £148 inc VAT.

don't floor it before 2k? Lol

Ok so i thought i would drive the car just to see if i can find anymore symptoms to describe the issue I've been having. On way home from work today, my car completely died on me resulting in a breakdown van to check my car followed by a recovery truck to take my car home.

I pulled out onto a round about and within seconds the car completely died with all lights still on. Turned the key to try and turn on however the car was cranking but not starting...

The breakdown man opened the bonnet and released a pipe, sprayed fuel into the pipe whilst i tried to turn the engine on which actually got the car started however once he stopped spraying, the car died again. Man thinks the fuel pump has gone. Anyone else think this is the case? really need to get the car sorted tomorrow as it's my only day off.

Get to a local independent VW Specialist for checking. If your fuel pump is dead or anything serious enough to stop your car dead VAGCOM diag tool will pick it up. If you have one day to sort it out you do not have many options I am afraid.

I had leaking fuel pump on a car once. New part was frankly ridiculous. I sourced a second hand one from breakers. Runs till today with no probs :)

Yeah hopefully it's an easy fix and not too costly...

Car's just been picked up by garage so will keep you posted on outcome

Does sound like fuel pump but could be other things also, normaly crack the injector open and turn the key to see if fuel comes out.

Diagnostics won't show below thershold fuel pressure?

You cannot crack an injector pipe on a pd tdi, they are all in the head. I don't think the car not running is a related problem to the noise. Not many things cause them not to run. Where abouts you from?

im from Enfield if you know where that is?

Got the news today from the garage and turns out that the turbo is fried :/ not the news i was expecting to be honest. I think they have quoted me well as the price in which they're asking for is £820 all in which is for a new turbo and fitted, still a lot of money before Xmas however. This price also includes an oil and filter change as they said this will give the turbo warranty.

Kinda wish i took that quote from warranty direct as it would have worked out cheaper. most annoying thing is my used car warranty ran out on the car 3 weeks ago so not good for timing. Not overly happy with the fabia vrs as it seems to have developed quite a few issues over the 1 year of ownership

Sry to hear that. Sounds like maybe it was a bad remap. Did it smoke much after you had it mapped. Smokey maps will kill a standard turbo sooner or later.

I had the car remapped in January this year so covered around 8k miles in that time. The remap didn't make the car smoke however it did started smoking a couple of months ago. I could have the car idling and there would be smoke coming out the exhaust which i spose is a warning sign. Guess the remap just speed the process of wearing...

Since the new turbo the car definitely feels much quicker however am still paranoid as the whining and rubbish mpg is still there :/

Sorry to hear turbo gone boom =(

What sort of whining noise did your car make? Mine's developed something similar, but sounds more like a belt slipping, albeit slightly metallic..

Hope it's not my turbo too, as my roof developed a leak yesterday - Christmas is cancelled this year! =/

Yeah it is a shame as haven't had much luck with the car in the past year since the ownership... Expected something much more reliable and to be honest i thought it would be which is one of the main reasons of purchase...

The noise can only be heard from the inside of the car and is hard to describe. The whine seems to be in sync with the revs of the car, it's not too loud but is noticeable when the music is turned off...

Yeah Xmas isn't going to be the best for me this year due to the financing of the turbo however it was a good idea i saved a little bit otherwise i would be in a worse situation... Hopefully it's not the turbo in your case and something less worrying

It sounds like it is connected with the charge system. Whether there's a leak in one of parts of the pressure side of the system, vacuum or pressurised or turbo is going. It may be oil delivery to the turbo being clogged up? Try putting in Diesel Engine Flush in, do as per instructions, drop the oil, change filter and put a fresh oil in. Maybe a cheap'ish way of addressing the problem with the turbo. Split hoses are not that expensive. Split intercooler or cracked intake manifold are.

You can check the hoses yourself, put it on a lift and squeeze the rubbery ones and inspect closely all plastic and metal ones - some things you can do by yourself on the cheap and save yourself your car being dismantled in search of the fault - happened to me... and in the end it was £15 split hose replacement...

Thanks for the advice. The turbo has already been replaced followed by the oil and filter. Cars driving a lot better now and mpg are slightly better than before... The garage performed a boost check to make sure there are no leaks and that was fine. Not sure if i can hear the noise anymore which is bizzare. Probably the best way of describing the whine is a bit like the power steering noise, sounds like that but of course in sync with the engine revs... if it was the oil feed, surely the garage would have seen this? along with the intercooler? I'm no expert in this field myself so not entirely sure

Was hearing this noise also on my vrs. Certain revs and its on a mapped vrs as well. Turned out to be turbo as it went boom on me! Replaced with new at a cost £650 all in! Now it's getting a 8 paddle clutch and smf tomorrow at £600!!!
