Car juddering - testing engine electronics light came on...

has now gone off again but the car is still shuddering like mad when driving. Just happened when I started the car up a few moments ago at a shop round the corner, had been driving fine until then. I parked up for a minute switched engine off and then a couple of minutes later started it back up, put the air con on full blast and the problem started. With the air con off the problem still exists. Have turned engine off, left it and gone to start back up and it still judders just idling without having to go anywhere. No more warning lights on either.

It was in at the dealership yesterday for a re gas and now this happens. Turns out the regas was needed as I have a leak in the system which they are investigating.

I wish I hadn't sold the scoob now, 3 years of trouble free motoring, go to a skoda and I get this and leaky air con :mad: :thumbdwn:

Any ideas what the problem could be?

Do you have VAG-Com or are you near someone who has it?

Best way is to plug in and read the codes.

Unfortunately no I don't have one and don't know anyone who has. I'm im in Maidstone if there is anyone local! Now resigned to using the Mrs 10 year old fiesta as the family car until this is resolved and believe me thats not fun!

I would suspect a faulty coil pack. Try disconnecting each in turn and see if you can isolate the problem. Alternatively if you have AA or RAC cover they should be able to diagnose the problem on the spot and will probably have a spare. Meanwhile you should not drive the car if it has ignition problems since you could end up damaging the cat.

Sounds like what happend to mine, although i drove mine home to a strong smell of rotten eggs. Was told that was the Cat getting to hot. I posted on here to find out what was wrong, and DGW was spot on as am sure he is this time. I had to get mine lifted to the garage, but the coil pack was only

Just had the same happen to me, DGW said it sounded like a coil problem and indeed it was, easily sorted in less than 30 minutes.

Thanks guys, and yep i'm also not in the know of what a coil pack is, where it is located or how to take it off and test. Basically my car/motorbike mechanics knowledge is non existent. Could someone please explain?

Go into the Gallery here and scroll backwards from that picture (select Previous Image). This will take you through a sequence of pictures dealing with how to change a coil pack. Basically each spark plug has its own coil which sits on top of it. The coils (the grey part on top) can fail leading to ignition problems.

If you have breakdown cover the Patrol Man may have one onboard. Mate of mine had one go, RAC Came out and changed it straight away. It's a very common snag.

DGW thank you for that, have been out and removed the engine cover and checked and all 4 coils packs appear to be connected OK so next trick is to try VRStu's suggestion of the RAC man. Don't have home start so sometime this week will drive a few miles up the road and make a call and see what he says. :thumbup:

The coil pack in the first eBay ad is definitely the wrong version (it's an E). The one in the second ad looks like it could be an L or an H. The former would be OK but the latter (H) is the one which failed a lot. See the pic below for the three types:

PS: The coilpack in the second ad is also the wrong one. It is for the Fabia with the AZQ (1.2 3-cylinder) engine.

Thanks, only reason I said this week is because I don't have home start so need to drive up the road before calling which I couldn't do tonight, this is better than me going to the dealership which is 30 miles away when I shouldn't be driving the car.

Thanks for all the help, it was a coil pack and got replaced under warranty free of charge once Skoda Recovery had picked me up and taken me 30 miles to get it done :) A lot of effort for a 2 minute job but well worth it, although turns out coil packs are currently 12 pounds so worth buying a few now before the shoot back up to 50/60 notes!

It is definitely coil pack failure. I bought a brand new 2002 Vrs Octy and had 3 burn out in the first 5 months. You check by removing each one in turn and starting the engine. When you remove the faulty one the engine will sound the same. When you remove a "good" one you will effectively only be running on 2 plugs and the engine will hardly be able to even idle.

They are dead easy to fit and these days yes the RAC and AA guys normally carry a spare. I paid about 15 quid each for my replacements and then claimed the money back from Skoda retrospectively (strange but true!). These days most coil packs have failed and been replaced but there are still some out there.
