Where to find 12V under the dash? Also, HID in highbeams?

Featured Replies

Hi, new user here. Currently driving a Volvo, will hopefully be an Octavia Combi pretty soon.

I'll start by pointing out that I've done everything I'm about to ask before, on my current car. I just have zero experience with octavias other than driving them, and selling parts for them. :)

I'm in the process of trading in my V70. The target of my wants right now is an ex dealer demonstrator Octavia, a 2012 Elegance model with factory turning HID's. Haven't closed the deal yet, but I will if everything goes to plan. If not, I'll look for another similar Octavia.

First off, I'm allergic to cig plug accessories and I want to avoid them wherever I can. Basically, I want to hardwire a 2A cig plug adapter somewhere under the dashboard and run a USB cable from there to my iPhone in its ProClip mount which will be installed between the stereo and vents. I ideally want the power source to cut off with the ignition, and I also don't want to drill into my brand new car to run a cable. Is this achievable?

Second question then. The car in question has HIDs, but I want to fit a 35 or 55W HID kit in my highbeams as well beacuse the factory Halogens were so poor compared to the excellent low beams.

Before you ask - yes, I do need to upgrade my highbeams. I understand that this isn't obvious to some (most?) people here, but this is a sparsely populated country. Very little traffic at night and lots of wildlife running about. Lots of opportunity AND reason to use your highbeams. Would a 55W CAN enabled kit work without frying the factory wiring, and without causing error messages on the display? I heard somewhere else that the motors for the turning headlights might get in the way of the hole I'll need to drill for the ballast. Is this true?

Also, a third question. What kind of bulbs is in the DRLs in the bumper? W5W?

Thanks :)

Don't know about the lights but the power for phone charger can be got easily from the fuse box in the end of the dash, just look for an ignition switched fuse

There is a switched live behind the radio too. Red wire from memory.

First, Hello and Welcome to the Forum. :hi:

Manufactures don't normally fit HID bulbs to high (main) beam because there is also a delay in start up and come to full brightens, so no use for flashing. They also do not like (and wear more) being switched on and off repeatedly. Some cars have bi-Xenon which uses a flap for dipped and main beam. They use a separate halogen bulb for flashing.

Your best bet is to buy either a higher % output bulb (Nightbreaker Plus or Extreme vision) or buy a blue coloured Halogen bulb.

I sell car parts and accessories for a living so I know the limitations of HID bulbs perfectly well. I also know that Nightbreaker Plus or ExtremeVision bulbs aren't anywhere near as powerful as HID, let alone "placebo" bulbs with blue paint. :) I've had HID conversions in other cars before.

I can certainly understand why you'd want good high beams, but in Scandinavian countries, don't a lot of people install long range high beam spot lights to run along with the main beam?

I don't know how to refer back to a topic on HID main beam that I started 16/09

HID on main beam

Started by stewartbaldwin, 16 Sep 2012 13:54 I fitted the parts mentioned and they work brilliantly (pun intended) Same justification as you, I spend a lot of time on main beam and I am prepared to live with the small disadvantages.

Thats ok as I already linked it in post #6!

A good thread on mainbeam hid's.

Yes, and my current V70 has a pair of badass HID driving lights already, but I kind of want to do it the "invisible" way on this car. :)
