Bottom ball joint fitted by an idiot

Featured Replies

Been doing a few bits to the vrs before I start using it so put the car on the ramp today to do the strut top mounts and was met by this display of complete retardedness

Notice anything wrong here?

Yep there is only one bolt holding it on. The other two are in there but dont go through the balljoint flange itself.

You can see where it has been pivoting out to the disc here.

The scarey thing is that the bolts didn't fall out, the ball joint didnt fail but that someone actually put it in like that.

There really are some special people out there

Yep seen that done before.

Was obvious when driving, all over the place.

jesus christ i done that once, and i will always check twice, happened while you owned it or last owner ?

That's very dangerous...That mechanic shoult pay at least with his job

...Yep seen that done before...

The other one I've seen a few times, is the flange bolted on top of the wishbone, with the wishbone end squashed closed.

Pervoius owner. Dunno if it was fitted by a garage or by himself either way someone did it with their eyes closed. You wouldn't think it was too difficult to line up 3 holes.

The wheel had been moving forward and catching the front of the arch liner.

Scary :-o

i drove for about 100 yards before i realised what i done and quickly mended it

I can understand why they might be done (because someone could not reassemble it properly). That is the sort of bodge trick I would expect to see from a backstreet garage. I had mine apart the other weekend when I remove my front wishbones to replace the bushes. Only took a minute of wiggling to get it back together properly. Granted I had an extra pair of hands to help.

Glad you found it sooner than later.

****e,

thats worse than when I had new ball joints fitted by a VAG "special"ist in Barry lol, they put them on the wrong sides and forced them back so the hub fitted lol, luckily I only drove on them a few days before getting the Cast wishbones off another car. broke the ball joints tho.

is that whats happened there? are they on the right sides? how can you fook that up?

really does beggar belief

Na it's on the right side.

I'll be ordering a pair of replacements on monday but I put that one in properly today, took all of 5 minutes and very little effort.

I rekon it was done on someones driveway because I just can't see anyone missing it from under the car. You never know though.

Whoever done that is a total special Cecil seen some bad work before but that takes the biscuit

Was the other side the same?

Just had a thought, th catching on the dust plate is only from turning. Not actual movement if you know what i mean. Obviously its not as rigid as using all 3 bolts.

I have a feeling its done like that for alignment purposes?

Would add castor that way and is an easier way than moving subframe if that makes sence?

Still bloody supid!

Other side was fine. Ive seen extended wishbone-balljoint mounts made up for extra castor but I wouldn't have thought thats what was hapening here. With one bolt in it the whole thing pivoted out when the bottom of the hub was pushed

Never seen that before. How dangerous but glad you sorted it out.

goes to show how strong the oem high tensile bolts are though i spose! you may want to replace them to just to be on the safe side?

I'm changing the lot to be sure. It's not worth risking it given the price of new ones

i think i paid about £1.60 odd each for mine (from jewsons oxford) when i rebuilt my suspension....

Wow people who can't do the job properly shouldent touch any tools IMO that's beyond stupid ...

Just out of curiosity Has it been MOT'd like that as well ?

I can't tell how long its been like that but TBH it wouldn't have gotten through the test over here if it had been like that on the day. As much as I may complain about our NCT I've not known them to miss something this obvious.

  • 11 months later...

Made a mistake when renewing my o/s wishbone. Forgot to get a balljoint. I cleverly thought "Oh well, it will last". Couple of thousand miles later it started to creak. I nursed it for a while by squirting a bit of WD40 inside the boot, but have now bought a new one from AMP.

I have whipped the wheel off, slackened the balljoint nut and whacked the hub mount( where the balljoint thread goes through). No good, then I had a look in the shed for the only splitter I have. Too bulky.. I have now disconnected the track rod end, tried jacking the hub up, disconnected the roll bar link. All of this accompanied by copious amounts of WD40 and whacks with a steel drift and lump hammer.

Help.
