Superb II Estate Tyre Shortlist - advice please

Featured Replies

About to renew two rear tyres on 2011 Superb II Estate 170CR TDI Manual on 18 inch Luxon alloys. Original Conti Sport Contact 2's close to the wear indicator after 17K (replaced the front two with Kumho Ecsta XT KU 37's after 14K). I drive around 1100 miles per month mainly on fairly demanding A and B roads often with quite poor surfaces. Living in Scotland we have lots of rain and quite severe winters to contend with. Price isn't a major issue but I feel I don't particularly want to exceed £100 a corner including fitting. I can get all of the undernoted tyres for somewhere in the region of £100 or less fully fitted. I'd like ideally to get at least 15 - 20K out of the tyres again. My shortlist is as follows:

Falken FK 452 / 453 or ZE 914

Fulda Sport Control

Hankook V12 Evo K110

Uniroyal Rainsport 2

The alternative is spend a bit extra and get Goodyear Efficient Grip or Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's.

Any advice welcome. Thanks.

This one's "off the wall" so bear with me:

Just over £500 at Halfords with Quidco cashback will see you to a set of 17" Team Dynamics Imola wheels with 225/45 R 17 BCE Autoguard tyres (or similar). They're Chinese and typically retail for about £50 each so are probably crap to hit the price point set by Halfords.

If this winter turns out like last, you might get some mileage out of them, but I would be tempted to fit some winter or all-season tyres to your nice new inexpensive set of wheels that happen to have the right PCD, offset etc and just need a set of thinner "tuning" bolts + locker.

Since nobody came up with anything, I thought you'd have the benefit of my advice (like it or not), i.e. spend a little more to make a crisis purchase into an investment. I have bought a set in anticipation of getting a Superb Outdoor which comes fitted with 18" Luxons.

Personally I never like the idea of mixing brands, so I'd recommend two more of wht you've put on the front.

I have the Goodyear eagle as2's on mine and they are very good so far. Cheapest I could get them for last month was £120 fitted.

Cheers

Steve

Seems off the wall to me. Spend £530 on a set of dubious alloys and tyres. Then spend more on bolts and locking bolts.

For just £80 more you buy a set of 4 18" Luxons.

The tyres may be dubious but the wheels certainly aren't as the manufacturer also supplies some prestige automotive marques as well as motor sport teams. Also the replacement costs of the (almost free) 17" tyres will be cheaper like-for-like than 18“ and the combination is more suited to winter use which is what I shall use them for with appropriate tyres. I'd rather keep my original wheels for less aggressive conditions given my experience of the finish of some VW wheels which have delaminated. There's no way of knowing what the tyres are in fact like until you try them on your setup, but I've been really pleased with some Maxxis tyres (also made in China) on a more sporty VAG car in all conditions - and I used to work for Mich! Not a bad price for Luxons though, and if I wanted another set of 18s I'd probably choose them and buy another set of centre caps (coincidentally a similar price to the tuning bolts mentioned).
