500 miles plus in a day

Featured Replies

We are lucky enough to be retired and divide our lives between our homes in England and Spain.

We drive down to Spain and back about three times a year.

We bought an Octavia about nine weeks ago and have just got back from a six week trip to Spain, the car performed faultlessly.

We drove from the Midlands down to Valencia in two days packing about 700 miles into each day with an overnight stop in Lyon. Keeping the speed around 75 saw a measured mpg of 62, pushing the speed up to the mid 80's saw a tankful drop to around 56 mpg

I have a bad back and allways worry about how I will cope in a new car, I had no need to worry, despite being 6ft and 19 stone, I had bags of room and not one problem with my back.

The DSG gearbox has impressed me more every day, as it has all who have travelled in the car.

We travelled back via ferry from Santander to Portsmouth, the 500 mile trip across Spain with a well loaded car cruising at just below 80 gave us a measured 64mpg.....not bad considering the number of fairly steep ascents you have to climb.

When we bought the car I had doubts about it only being a 1,6 diesel....I shouldn't have worried, granted not a great deal happens when you put your foot at 80mph, but in normal every day motoring more than fast enough, intact with the 7 speed DSG I allways leave traffic well behind at lights and junctions......even all the trainee Alonsos!!

We bought the car at 11 months with only 6000 on the clock at a good price, it was only the base model so I as a bit worried that I would miss all the"kit".... the only thing I am missing is central locking from blipping the key..... I still can't find the key hole in the dark.

In summary, dead chuffed with the car, I only wish that I had let my brain dictate my car purchases in the past rather than my heart.

By the way, I read all this stuff about regens, I'm not aware of experiencing one

Sounds very similar to the annual trip I do. Thats really impressive mpg for a fully laden 1.6tdi! Glad you're happy with the new car. :-)

Sorry, posted in wrong section, should be Octavia II

How do I move it?

Moved.

With long trips like that you shouldn't have any regen worries, as it lots of very short journeys that may cause the irritations of having to do a 10 -15 min run at 3k rpm in order to kick off a regen.

These CR engines dont appear to be prone as badly as the PD engines with this issue

I think they are a cleaner burning engine to start with owing to the more precise control of the fueling.

Very impressive MPG even if the trip computer might be a few MPG off real world figures.

I think for our next car we would seriously consider along the lines of a 1.6 CR TDI with a DSG box.

Hi Phil, I don't have a trip computer, the above figures are actual fill to fill calculations

Ah right! I didn't realise they didn't come with a trip computer. Seems they really skimpt on the equipment but then you do still get a lot of car for your money.

Is it the 105 bhp engine?

Yes it is the 105 Phil, it's a cracking little unit......far more petrol like in its behaviour, " willingness" to rev than other diesels I have driven, but still plenty of low down torque

You dont have a trip computer?!

It is the base model that doesn't even have remote locking so possibly not.

This would agree with my own observations, we have yet to do a Spanish run in the Octavia, but der ould Galaxy was there a wheen o times ( an Portugal + Misc other European countries)

Santander to Torremolinos in one run

The key to the good milage is continuious driving for several hundred miles across the alto plano, pluss less traffic allows for less braking.

Generally good roads too, a bugger of a climb up out o Santander mind.

Specially for the brave souls in the Series II Landrover whom we were in conservation with on the ferry.

Ah ok, I assumed they all had a basic trip computer as part of the dash and expected it just not to have maxidot. Every day is a school day! Thanks :)

Sounds like a really good trip, and as a "new" Skoda owner, I was also pleased and a bit surprised with the comfort after a long trip to Italy and back in July. I have the base level 1.9 Classic, and it was as relaxing to drive as my old 5 series Beemers.

I thought the same but just been on the Skoda site and it doesn't mention anything about a trip computer under the "S" spec.
