Mileage for cambelt change ?

Featured Replies

Whats the mileage on a y2000 1.9tdi 110bhp engine for changing the cambelt, there is a sticker on the bulkhead saying "change the toothed belt @ 60,000" but the manual says 40,000 I think the engine is AHF and do you have to change the pully along with the belt ? :)

Early models were 40,000, when they were replaced they were uograded to 60,000 miles. To do it right is expensive, as well as the belt I believe there are either two or three pulleys plus a water pump which is driven by the cam belt. Plus its not a particularly nice job if you have turbo and air con, (so a garage told me)

On yours it 60,000 miles. 08/2001my> non PD TDi is 80 or 100,000 miles.

But to be honest I recomend them al at 60k and also replace the tensioner.

60,000 Miles. If I remember correctly ours was a tadge over

What about on ther octy VRS

What about on ther octy VRS

Apparently it's 100kish but better to do at 60k.

I strongly agree - never go over 60k miles or 3 years between changes imho.

If it hasn't done the milage but it's just old, it can 'go' because of that reason.

If you have done 60k miles then just get it replaced, with the engine out of warranty you really don't want to find the belt has snapped - new engines are expensive... (yeah I know, it may not be that bad, but still, why risk it).

Things to consider as well are remaps - definitely wouldnt remap it when you are near the 'change cambelt now' range, get it done first, then remap it.

After all, remaps reduce safety margins to some extent - so they're pretty much fine if you ensure you stay on top of maintenance (including preventative maintenance, like for example more frequent oil change, brake fluid upgrade/change). Cambelt is just another part of the things I'd consider changing a little quicker, perhaps at 50k with a remap.

 Only done 32000 so will wait and change it at 60000 as its a bog standard engine, was there a plastic pully fitted on early models and then changed for a metal one ? and I take it that you have to lock the engine with pins when changing the belt. :)

All the tensioners have a plastic outer casing.

You need a pin for the pump and a flat plate that locks into the back of the camshaft.

You can get a Gates kit which contains the belt and pullleys, but I would advise that you go to a dealer and get new engine mount bolts (not in the kit). I have seen some of these break and the engine goes lop sided and the part of the mount which bolts to the engine has to be replaced - all for the sake of a few bolts.
