Smelly LEDs?

Featured Replies

For the past couple of weeks, i've been aware of a "chemical" smell eminating from my boot.

If I drive with the driver's window open, it sucks the smell into the cabin.

It's not totally unpleasant but still a bit offputting.

At first, I thought it could be either a bottle of G12++ I had sitting in there, or fumes from my gubbed backbox being sucked into the car but I now think I have narrowed it down.

I removed my bootliner, new brake discs, etc. that were all sitting in the boot.

I removed the trim from the tailgate and I could smell it really strong.

It doesn't look like my rear washwipe is leaking (common problem when I had my Octavia), but I actually think the smell is common from the new LED number plate bulbs I fitted a couple of weeks ago.

Certainly the timeline fits.

Completely strange one - i'm gonna swap them back for the OEM bulbs at the weekend to see if the smell goes away.

Has anyone ever had anything remotely similar when fitting LEDs?

Have heard about similar smells from people changing to higher wattage full beam bulbs, resulting in the wires melting.

Only way to test really is to change back to OEM bulbs like you say/
