humming noise from engine when switched off...

Featured Replies

what is the electrical ' hum ' that normally goes off after you switch your car off as mine is doing it all the time...

Did have a flat battery yesterday caused by a cooling fan problem. When the AA Arrived and plugged his booster into my battery to jump start it, my rad cooling fan came on straightaway without my ignition keys in !

He did manage to start it but when he switched it off the humming noise was on all the time...

Managed to get it home just...did cut out once when changing down gear at about 30 but restarted itself..

So its now sat on my drive with battery disconnected and wallet wide open, waiting to see how much this new problem ( 3rd this year )

Is going to cost me !

Already spent 67quid on a new battery yesterday because I thought that was the problem as it was 5 years old.

AA did say it could be anything like cooling fan sensor and the humming could be ecu related, which could be caused by the cooling fan problem.

Cooling fan only comes on though when it ' feels like it ' though because it only ran once when the guy was with the car for 30 mins, he said it could have come on at any time when I was away from the car ad flattened the battery.

Sorry can't help, although I can confirm that my 57 plate PD170 vRS also hums for around 30 seconds after switching off the engine/ignition. It's not the fan, its electrical.

My 08 plate PD140 doesn't do it.

I can only hear it though when I stand/walk around the front of the car and by the time the thought of 'that sounds a bit weird' has entered my head its stopped.

Hopefully a fault has been logged on the cars ECU, getting it read will identify the problem..?

yeah, the hum does normally go off after about 30 seconds, but this was going on until...well..i disconnected the battery !

dunno if it was ecu maybe ???

anyway car is in garage yet again and im awaiting to see how much its going to cost me this time...

am having a bit of a love-hate relationship with the bl**dy thing since April....

On my 09 plate VRS there is a secondary cooling pump that runs for about about 30 seconds when engine turned off after a run, this is to keep coolant circulating and prevent hot spots in the engine block.

Exactly. It's cooling. RTFM, I'd say :giggle:
