Variable servicing...

Featured Replies

Been looking at something to replace my trusty, but worn Mk1 Octy. Flirted with a Greenline Fabia II (I do 25K miles a year) decided to have a bit more metal around me and looking at used MK2 Octy 1.9 tdi. Found one at a main dealer, fairly high miles for age (09) , but the service history seems a little odd...

Serviced at

15,000 (fair enough)

39,000 (gap of 23,000 miles seems a little high, but not entirely impossible)

72,000 (gap of 33,000 seems really high my thoughts either someone missed a stamp or missed the service...)

Any thoughts?

If you're not happy walk away and keep looking. Not totally sure what the maxium mileage is on variable, I thought it was 20k.

I thought it was 2 years or 18200 miles or if car decided it needs done earlier nothing beyond. If you are happy with car and they are giving some sort of warranty might be something to use to help batter price down.

Maximum mileage between variable services is 2 years or 30,000kms, so thats 18,750 miles. This is the absolute maximum value between services and no car on variable will have run longer without missing a service.

it could just be a missing stamp in the book, if the car has always been serviced in the same place give them a call and they should be able to confirm the history.

Thanks all, not convinced I can be bothered tracking down a missing oil change. It is "approved" used but only on the 3 month warranty due miles. The dealer's not local either so I can't just pop in and look over the paperwork. My search continues!

I'd also read it was a max of 30,000 km's (18,750 miles) but then I have read several threads where people have claimed over 20,000 miles on a variable?

33,000 miles is impossible so they missed a service somewhere along the line.

I do wonder... could someone really go 15,000 miles beyond a service? Seems somewhat unlikely but not impossible, you would think it would be logged somewhere in the car's memory. Anyhow, if that service was missed I guess it could be fairly bad long term.

I guess there is nothing to say the owner didn't swap out the oil and filter himself inbetween services.

equally there is nothing to say (s)he did though...

When I bought my vrs it had 21k miles on it and was 18 months old and the display still said it had 1k miles until service was due. Have since changed to fixed as I dont believe in letting it go so long between services .

Agreed, but I was responding to your point about letting the car go 15,000 miles beyond a service, an official service will be recorded with a dealers stamp, a DIY oil change won't.

The best way to know for sure is to make contact with the previous owner.

The brochure states a max of 20K or 2 years which ever comes first, So I'd give it a wide berth. Dissapointing as it probably is there's loads of good ones out there that have a good service history so why take the risk?

Caveat Emptor. (Buyer beware).

I would not buy. There are plenty of other cars out there with a complete service history.

Good luck

Missed oil services on the TDi = early death...

I would not risk it unless it was substantially cheaper!.

The dealer network will have services on record. My Scout was very well serviced in the 26k before I bought it (x3) but for some reason two of the services weren't stamped in the book.

The dealer that did those missing services stamped my book for me and provided confirmation that they'd been done and exactly what had been done.

It reassured me no end to know that, warranty or not, it had been suitable looked after.

Thing is, if a previous owner didn't get the right servicing done, how we'll do you think they looked after and carefully drove the car?

The Skoda uk web page says, Octavia (and Yeti and Superb) 4 cylinder diesels can "go up to approx 30,000 miles" between services.

With 24,000 for v6 diesels and 20,000 for petrol.
