Android Tablet Lockdown/App Control

Featured Replies

I'm considering using an Android tablet for work-based training.

Basic idea is that the tablet is loaded up with some training videos, or slides from PowerPoint in JPG format that employees can go through.

The tablet needs to be used only for this purpose. Has anyone seen, or have any experience of controlling an Android tablet in this way - so perhaps they could only run a whitelist of applications? Effectively it would be the Gallery app at this stage. And so users were unable to access anything else - Settings, other apps etc.

Cheers,

Steve.

There is precious little for Android. Most MDMs only have the very most basic controls for Android. There are a few companies developing them but from the feedback I've had it's really not going to add up to much and the plethora of Android versions doesn't help.

I've spoken with most of the major companies offering MDM solutions. Pretty much all products are 95% the same. For a small number of device you can use Apple's own management software to lock things down.

Android is for consumers only. If you need control then it's really iOS or Blackberry for now. Windows Surface might offer more options but it's too early to say right now.

Thanks for the feedback. It's much as I've found up until now; just wanted to check I was on the right track.

Not going down the Apple route, for a number of reasons. For Android I was just thinking along the lines of a locked or controlled launcher perhaps.

Surface would have been a possibility as it would have the chance to integrate with existing user control systems. Just a shame they're so late to the party!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gears42.surelock looks like it may do the job, and has won an Enterprise award from Motorola. Doesn't seem to have much in the way of remote management, but does at least offer export/import of settings so you could set up a "master" tablet in the way you want and then import those settings onto other devices.

I installed this to my daughters tablet last night: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiddoware.kidsplace&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5raWRkb3dhcmUua2lkc3BsYWNlIl0.

once running you select what apps and settings you want the user to be able to control and enter a pincode, then the users are only presented with those apps, excellent for the wee one but could be adapted for your situation.

Interesting, thanks. Will take a look.

Another vote for kids place - it seems to keep the lighting fast stick paws at bay!

Damn, kids place isn't compatible with the nexus 7 but i can see it being really useful on my phone. My son helpfully sorted all my apps into folders the other day, no logic to what went in each folder though

I know you don't want to go down the Apple route, but iOS 6 allows you to lock the device to just one program, which is great.

It is great if you have an Ipad, but he doesn't !!!

Thanks guys. Yes, aware of the possibilities within iOS6. But due to a number of reasons it's not a viable option.

Result.... The kid lock down app now works fine on the Nexus 7
