Winter Tyres?

Featured Replies

I put my Avon Ice tourings on today. For about two minutes I thought the noise was bad, but it smoothed out and felt more stable than on the OE continentals. Since the weather turned cold the car seemed as though the tyres were soft even though the pressures were fine, and now it feels great again! I'm doubly sold again!

Hi Guys

This is my first real post to the board.

I've been looking at putting winter tyres on my 2012 170 4x4 Elegance Hatch but stepping down from 225/40/18's to 205/55/16's - thought I'd better check it with my insurance (through the AA) and basically, if I understood them correctly, they will only insure the car with the exact same size of wheel and tyre as fitted as standard. Firstly this makes the winter wheel/tyre package very expensive and maybe even impossible given the speed/load ratings of the OEM tyres (94Y).

Perhaps I'll just have to rely on the additional grip/safety afforded by the 4x4 feature.

My guess is that you should be fine until you get a chance to change your insurer :wall:

It is possible to have the correct rating winter tyres in 18" - i have them on my 4x4 170 elegance on Luxon rims.

It is also possible that the insurance company would insure you, if the rims you were using, were made by the vehicle manufacturer and not a 3rd party.

Yes, I'm on the 18" Themistos which are the same ones as came with the car new (a 2012 170 4x4 as it happens). I put Avon ice touring on and as I said above I'm happy. My insurer, Admiral said :

Just to let you know we do not need to note winter

tyres on your policy, providing they are fitted to the standard wheel as we

do not class this as a modification. However if you are changing the wheels t

anything non standard, such as an alloy, then this will affect the policy and

you will need to call our customer service team to have these included.

I had sepcifically asked about the steel wheels that could be standard onn some models, though theye weren't on my particular version, so I take this to be OK so long as the wheel is standard on some version of the car. I asked the question about my Roomster, as the standard alloys would cost almost £700 for a set as they are made of pur unobtanium. I then bought some steel rimms that are Skoda OE and are fitted to some versions of the roomy of the same age.

Just ordered 4 Falken HS-439 from reifen.com in Germany for a touch over £400 delivered to my local garage for fitting on Tuesday.

I got the 439's for £59 each? But I'm running 16's. Cheap tyres make a refreshing change.

Bought a set of Yeti steels16" 7J and run Continental TS830P 215/55 97VXL from Camskill. Sweet for ski roads in Scotland.
