Should I get a Mk2 Octavia VRS?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys and Girls.

So I had a Mk 1 VRS, Loved it, had no problems after 2 years ownership, not even tyres and I drove it like I stole it. I think I had to change a thermostat and that's it, obviously servicing also.

I changed the car year and a half ago for a BMW 520d 2005, bored.com.

I'm also amazed how many problems I've had, BMW's are supposed to be bullet proof, I have not found this to be the case, the car has a full BMW service history and I've spent a few quid on it including lots of tyres and they are run flats so not cheep. Also I don't do lots of miles out of town and I'm not convinced diesel is actually giving me much of a saving. Obviously I get good fuel economy on the motorway but I used to get 40mpg ish in my old vrs but it was fun and didn't sound like a tractor, also diesel is quite a bit more than petrol now

My love affair with the mk1 VRS started in 2001 but I couldn't afford one until I was older and they where a bit cheaper as unfortunately I had to feed my family and stuff of that nature.

Anyway I'm getting itchy feet and really want a petrol Mk2, but I don't want to be disappointed with the survivability or more importantly the reliability.

I know most of the VRS petrol owners will be a lot like me and love cars and appreciate them for what they are, and also appreciate the VRS for being an amazing car with both practicality and also being great value for money.

So will I be disappointed? Is the new VRS reliable? Decent on fuel?Good to drive, easy to maintain etc etc.

I found this forum to be excellent when I had my VRS, lots of people who are very knowledgeable and love cars, the BMW forums are crap, no one ever responds.

I look forward to many people talking me into getting a MK 2.

Cheers

Phil

I think you'll enjoy it :)

What are you looking to spend?

I think they're generally reliable and well put together, but like anything they're not invincible. Find a looked after one with FSH and you should be good to go.

Whereabouts are you based? Could be an idea to see if anyone local can show you round one, so you have a point of reference for any you see up for sale.

Cheers Wardy.

I'm located on the Wirral, near Liverpool and I'm looking around 6k spend, I know my options may be limited at this price but I'm not a big miles customer so don't mind a higher miles car around 70-80k as I wont add a massive amount to that over 2 years.

Thanks for my first response, I would be waiting a year on the BMW forums.

Prices for the pre-FL (facelift) TFSI vRS have continued to fall, as interest in higher performance petrols has dwindled, so there should be some choice for you. Have seen some higher milers that could well suit you at criminal money - for the spec and performance they offer.

As you're reasonably local, a recommendation would be to come along to a North West meet, where you'd certainly see some options. Thread for next month's isn't up yet, but have a look in the NW meets section for an idea:

Hi I've had mine for 3 weeks - petrol vrs and I love it, so comfortable and practical with the added bonus of some decent power.

Found it to be well put together and on par to my seat cupra....

Picked mine up a couple of weeks ago. I've had all sorts of cars; this is by far the best!

Performance is very impressive. Second and third gear pull amazingly!

Averaging 30.1 mpg with about 75% of my driving in city areas.

Love it!

Had mine a day. Yes, go for it

I've had mk1 and now mk2. If I'm honest I find the Mk2 a bit boring in standard form in comparison to the mk1. The turbo on the Mk2 is very quiet and there isn't that raw shove when the turbo kicks in that the mk1 gave. Yes the mk2 is a little faster but the raw, untamed feel of the mk1 was very nice.

Get a few mods on the Mk2 and the smile factor reappears big style! There is also greater tuning potential with the mk2, it's a cracking engine.

With a heavy heart I let my long beloved diesel Fabia vRS go recently, making the jump to a 2012 TSI petrol estate (pre-reg - delivery miles) with more than a little trepidation. Sure the fuel consumption is a shock to the wallet compared with the PD130 of the Fabia, and the loss of that slug of mid range torque was a concern, but the bigger smoother more comfortable ride of the TSI comes with a much wider surge of grunt that keeps on going where the Fabia vRS ran out.

I too do less miles than in past years and took the petrol route in part for that reason, but find the right car you like and go for it. As an old colleague was fond of saying, " don't take life too seriously, its only temporary condition ". We're a long time dead, and although the moths have all drowned in my tear soaked wallet I'll get over it as my dear lady often tells me.

I'm sold on it already.

Should I get a Mk2 Octavia VRS?

Yes.

My only advice would be to take your time, there are plenty out there. Choose the best example you can afford.
