Boot light not working

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with my beloved Superb. The boot light is completely dead. Tried changing the bulb. Tried checking to see if there is a fuse for it but there does not seem to be.

The bulb is wired to the high level brake light - I checked the voltage whilst the boot was open was open and the difference between the wires was 0V.

The high level brake light is working. The micro switch to indicate the boot is open is working as the TFT display in the dash indicates when it's open.

Any ideas?!

Cheers,

Joe

On mine the fuse for the boot light is the convenice module fuse if I remember right. If the central locking is working the fuse is ok. The power wire for the boot light is connected to the node located under the carpet in the rear passener area. (check water ingress topic to see a picture of which one it is - the one with all the red wires connected to it). A bad connection here prevents the boot light working.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

The central locking is working so it sounds like that fuse is okay.

My light is wired to the bottom of the hi level brake with two wires; a red wire and brown and black wire. Both are reading back 0v with a multimeter. Where is that unit in the rear passenger area? Under the carpet in the drivers or passengers side footwells?

Thanks

Joe

Might be a silly question, but does the boot light come on when the boot's open and the high level brake light is on?

Hey Gaz,

No, the boot light is completely dead.

The high level brake light and rear tail lights are working as desired (following a quick test with a golf umbrella wedged against the brake pedal...). It's all a bit odd!

Cheers

Joe

It doesn't sound right that it'd be solely connected to the high level brake light, unless it's just where the wires route through. The brake light itself is just that and only comes on because power s passed across it. You know the car knows it's boot's open, so the question (I specialise in stating the obvious!) is why isn't it then applying power to the bulb?

I'm afraid I can't help with where the node under the carpet is that Nack mentions, but a bad connection anywhere will obviously cause grief, so that's where I'd start.

Has it worked since you've had it - just wondering if the wiring's taking the right path?

Do your rear courtesy lights work?

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the responses.

The light used to work - up to a couple of weeks ago.

Also, all of the other interior and exterior lights lip work perfectly.

I don't think the high level brake light has much to do with the boot light - its just where the wires come from - probably the closest electrical node to the top of the boot. I think my next stage of investigation is to follow up on that box in the rear footwell.

Thanks,

Joe

Have you checked the replacement bulb is okay?

Hi Gaz,

I'll try a replacement but I think the 0V on the wires indicates that there's a fundamental problem somewhere in the car!

Cheers,

Joe

Yeah I did see your comment about 0v, and if that's the wires at the light fitting terminals, then that's fine. If it's elsewhere - say at the high level brake light - then that might not (necessarily) be a true gauge if you can't track the wires all the way.

http://farm4.staticf..._d7b982a012.jpgThis is the circuit for the passat. Item 50 is the boot lamp. There are two nodes by the looks of it.The one in the rear paasenger footwell that gets problems when there are water ingress issues and another which I do not know where it is.

Had this problem no interior rear lights not working.Boot locks and unlocks as should do.Changed lock for second hand one and hey presto all lights now working.Must have been faulty switch in lock assembly.
