I'm looking to do a service on my vRS (engine code ASZ) at the weekend and want to fit a magnetic sump plug. Does anyone know the size thread? Or can they point me in the direction of a plug that will definitely fit?

Having searched through the forums Kennypd has recommended one but I don't fancy paying the ~20 quid price tag if I can help it!

E-BAY : Just tap in Fabia VRS Magnetic sump plug will give you loads of sellers, with a choice of colours with RED or BLUE.

The head of BLUE sump plug I bought was smaller at 17mm as opposed to original 19mm, but threads were identical, albeit a shorter screw thread length than the original.

Around the £5.00 all-in, and as usual the precaution not to over-tighten let the copper-washer do the main sealing.

What's the advantage?

It there is any small metal particles it will stick to the plug and not end up circulating the engine

Has anyone actually found any metal stuck to one of these? I had one in my Golf for a while, but went back to the normal one after a couple of oil changes and zero particles.

Seems to me that if anything went wrong enough to generate bits that would stick to it, the engine would be toast anyway. Surely most 'wear' particles are microscopic, and get taken out by the oil filter? :think:

Thanks for the responses guys. I'd seen the red and blue ones on eBay but was ideally after a discrete (silver or black) one. Not that anyone would notice but I'm a bit pedantic with things like that!

The advantages are that it would attract fine metallic particles; you'd be surprised what they can pick up, even with a mechanically sound engine; I've had them on other cars before and whilst I don't think it'd particularly save an engine I guess every little helps. I can't say how effective it'd be on a PD engine though as I've never had one with a magnetic sump plug.

I'm no metallurgist Wino but perhaps there is potential for it to attract particulate too small to be captured by the filter?

Avoid the ECS magnetic sump plug, made out of aluminium so you cant get it very tight to crush the washer so it ends up leaking.

The sump magnets vary in length, as well as the power of the magnetism.

Edit: Forget what I said, they're only few ££ for the alu/copper ones.. Why not get those.. :think:

Hmm.. Would anyone much rather pay half that price for a diy one with original sump plug material (doesn't naff up) and possibly an even stronger magnet than original?

Could make them but dont see the point if theres an ok alternative on zeebay (alu bolt with copper washer and magnet under £6). Making them with original parts will cost i guess 10-12 plus postage.
