  • How are your brakelights? All working okay? Failed brakelight switch has been known to cause the xmas tree effect...

  • You have connect 4 Get it scanned with VCDS before anything else.

  • I would check your alternator out put, the fact that it starts doesn't mean that alternator is putting out suficiant charge, most chassis systems require above 12v out put to opperate.

How would i go about checking the alternator??

A basic check would be with a volt meater across the battery, volage output around 13 volts, and then with an amp meter on the output cable from the alternator, the amps should rise as more load applyed and the revs rise.

Okay, cheers. A problem i've got is having none of those things. :D

Any tools i use are all back 'home' in the West Mids and i'm not too sure about driving up on Friday with the lights all still on. :(

It's looking more and more like i might need to call the AA out but hopefully it will be dry tomorrow and i can get the bonnet up.

Hey john,

I hate reading posts like this as it ain't good when **** happens. Have you checked the earth strap from the passenger side turret to the battery is tight and ok? I also believe these to be weak as skoda did an upgraded part. The only other area I would double check is the vacuum box area to make sure the block is clipped on properly and you haven't pinched or damaged any wires or vacuum pipes whilst putting the brace on. It might just be a coincidence it's happened at the same time aswell. Hope you get it sorted mate.

You have a pm aswell!

Cheers Mattie, PM replied to. I'm hoping i've just caught something and it's just slowly worked loose and will be an easy fix.

Doesn't help the car was sitting around for about 2 1/2 days before i moved it on the car park just to get it away from a big tree in case it came down in the wind, then this happens when i'm about to go to the doctors Friday morning, another day and a half later.

Just taken her for a drive. All lights still on but drives exactly how it should be, so they're not kicking in safe mode or anything. Bit dicey when hitting a bit of lying water and wouldn't want to have to brake suddenly, so driving is still going to be a no no.

Had the bonnet up and can't see any damaged wires or loose connections, though there is a slight hissing sound come from or near the coolant bottle, this was before i had my drive.

Hopefully will be able to get it hooked up to VCDS and see what's wrong. Even checked the fuses, just in case. :(

Check ALL the vacuum hoses from the box down as far as you can, it sounds like you've pulled a pipe out or pinched and nicked a hole in one

I'll check it out either later or tomorrow night, started peeing it down and i haven't got any shelter!! :(

I did have as good a look as i could at the hoses but couldn't see anything. All of them seemed to be connected properly. Hope it's dry tomorrow night.

Are you sure it's a hissing noise and not the alternator?

Mine makes a whispy hissy kind of noise and believe it is the pulley on it that is starting to fail as they have a clutch kind of mechanism in them so as not to shred the belt.

I'll check again at the weekend but is sounded like a wet hissing.

Thanks to Rob @ W8 Performance for meeting up with me tonight and running it through the VCDS. Seems like i've got an ABS sensor issue, so will get that changed when i can and hopefully it'll fix the problem.

Buy yourself a OBD reader, no where near as good as vagcom but it can give you fault codes and a place to start. Only about £25 on ebay.

I would guess it is something to do with an ABS sensor, absoulte guess that is.

BOOM My guess was right. lol.

Hope you get it fixed buddy!

Well done mate.

I'm hoping to get it fixed on the weekend before Christmas and won't be using the car that often, so should hopefully be okay.

Just need to source the part needed now.

Remember the brisk25 code on ecp.

I've just had my 1st quote for changing the ABS sensor from a place called CamSpec in Crawley. They want £29.50 + VAT for Labour and £49.26 + VAT for the Sensor, so total fitted price will be £94.51 inc VAT.

They then go on to say that if the sensor is seized into the hub, it will cost an additional £29.50 + VAT on top of the price to remove the brake disc and drill out the sensor.

Seems a bit much when i can pick up the sensor for about £36.00 inc VAT from ECP.

What are the chances of the sensor actually being 'seized into the hub'???

Not done it myself but IMO it's a bit of a lottery. S'pose they're being up front about the process. If you verify the ECP sensor is OEM, can't you buy the ECP one, pick it up or get it delivered to the garage?

J.

Is the sensor not part of the hub or is that just the sensor ring?

I did think about contacting them to say i could source the part cheaper and i dare say that Camspec won't be using an OEM part anyway. There only appears to be 1 make available on EPC which is a Pagid (http://www.eurocarpa...087dabf1)

I think i'll take it steady this weekend when i drive home and get the car jacked up to check the area. It has also been suggested that the sensor could just be mucked up, so a good clean might sort it out but i think i'm plucking at straws for a cheaper option.

I'm not too sure myself. A quick Google seems to suggest the sensor ring is part of the hub.

http://skoda.workshop-manuals.com/fabia-mk1/index.php?id=200

Sensor ring for ABS on the front and rear axle The sensor ring -1- is fitted in the wheel hub with wheel bearing -2- and cannot be replaced individually.

In the event of damage or defect of the sensor ring, replace wheel hub with wheel bearing.

I'm guessing this is the source to my christmas tree dash but why would this just come apart?

Looks more like its been caught with a wheel when turning or maybe going over something in the road?

  • Author

No idea what caused and even wondered if it had been cut but fixed it and it's cleared the ASR and ABS lights off the dash but i'm still stuck with the Engine Management Light on. Anyone any ideas??

Also, does anyone know what hose number 3 coming out of the vacuum box does??

It wasn't on as tight as the others yesterday, so i pushed it on but the car is feeling a bit standard and as though the stage 1 remap has gone. :(

The engine light is probably because its still storing the original fault and needs scanning and resetting.

I really hope so mate.

I hope my 'pikey' fix holds together over Christmas as well!! :D
