Decided to slacken off my folding farm....

Featured Replies

Well, its all a little bit much now. Have 5 CPUs going a lot of the time and there using a lot of juice (I know I was warned... :P) so I'm going to thin it down to 2 towers + laptop, and get rid of two towers.

Seems a shame after making up some ground in the great folding league, but I've decided there's a little more than just folding in my life.... :D

Anyone want to make an offer for a 1.67ghz Athlon with DVD-R/W? :rofl:

just get one really fast one........... do the same amount of folding but cheaper.....athlon XP 64 3500 should do the trick and sell the others

Did warn ya :rofl:

I'd love to be able to buy it but I'm skint myself soz :(

Try and flog to family, that's not a bad spec rig :D

You've done well Jase, got past me anyway! :D

How much you looking for on the Athlon tower? I'd probably just eBay, you seem to like doing that ;)

Steve

WOW!!! you feeling ok J?? :orb_sick:

This is good news for me ;)

Yep, you're rapidly approaching too!!

I'm the opposite, if I *could* fold at work, I'd be laughing. Just wish I could coax FAH past our proxy server setup :mad:

Steve

It's pretty tricky to get it working with proxy servers I must admit :(

Tell me about it! Using the console, have working username and password to hand, but nothing. Always fails to connect :mad:

Apologies for my ignorance but what's 'folding'?

Check out http://folding.stanford.edu for info

Its essentially them sending you a file to crunch in the background of your PC, while its running, and then the "worked out" file is sent back. Its basically like a HUGE computer farm, but instead of it all being in Stanford Uni, its spread out ALL over the world using the spare CPU power in people with a PC connected to the net.

And ultimately its medical research into "protein folding" - basically... whatever that actually IS?! :D

:thumbup:

Yep it's basically "grid"-computing where work is farmed out across a bank of machines, and processed in parallel. Others include SETI and UDAgent which is a cancer research one..... :D

You can try editing client.cfg directly - here's the proxy section of mine:

[http]

active=yes

host=swi-prx1.companydomain.com

port=80

usereg=no

proxy_name=companydomain\ncarring

proxy_passwd=

Me and dad are crunching away at the WUI's. And now are just underneath the big boys!!!

My 100th WU is being crunched as we speak - wahooo :D

Chris

We are only 8 positions below you and we have only done 8 WU/S!!!

Thanks for that Nick, I'll give it a go on Monday.

I'm stuck around the middle of the list and not likely to move up any further, I don't think! Just the one PC processing ... and that's the one I have to use as well. But it IS on 24/7/365.

My folding arm has just taken a big hit temporarily. At work we are introducing some monitoring software for the server farm. Yes you guessed it, one of the things it monitors is CPU usage and I dont think I could explain why its stuck at 100% all the time. So until I can workout how to configure it the way I want I am down 5 processors.

Now is Colins chance to catchup.

You'll be surprised how much idle time you have on a system you're using, especially if left on all the time :D

Chris

We have two computers running still, dads is going alot quicker than mine!! He is on his 9th and im on my 2nd! But im on mine alot more than he is on his!! We keep aiming to get with the big boys!! trying to get past tavia first!!:P
