High oil use

Featured Replies

Anyone experience high oil use on the 1.6 felicia? nothing leaks underneath but there seems to be a possible leak somewhere around the inlet manifold from what i can see. Its using nearly a litre a month!

any help is much appreciated

those engines are quite common for high oil consumption, the oil buildup around the intake manifold is likely to be oil vapour condensation from the crankcase breather, it kind of collects in the plastic pipe on top of the throttle body and seeps down.. the high oil use is probably just worn piston rings tbh

But nearly a litre a month?? Thats nearly as bad as an Mazda RX8 lol

yeah all fairly normal, at least you never have to do oil changes any more then becuase you are putting in a fresh litre of oil every month

My old 1.6 mpi at 107k uses virtually no oil between servicing & that's with a rocker cover leak ;)

Hi, at 74k what you're getting through does sound relatively high consumption wise. From what I've read the 1.6 does seem to range between very low consumption, which tends to be my experience, up to the higher end depending on age, mileage, servicing etc. Most older engines will to some degree have some leakage & mine weeps from the rocker cover gasket (fairly common). You should be able to spot any signs/evidence of more excessive leakage however & it's also important to ensure servicing is up to date with the correct spec/grade of oil. If it's burning oil due to wear & tear you'll be able to detect that distinctively by what's being discharged through the exhaust (grey/blue smoke with that characteristic smell).

Good luck & let us know how you get on.

Cheers,

Rob.

It's normal to measure oil consumption as volume per unit distance. Unit distance is often taken as 1_000 miles.

Do you have any sign of blue smoke from the exhaust, ot a smell of burning oil?

Any signs of leakage from the rocker cover gasket?

Drips on the road after being parked for a while?

i have same problem as you mate and mines a SLXi does yours have air con i found my oil to end up on top off spark plugs by ht leads and uses the same amount of oil too in a month and seems to be very sooty and does not pass emissions i am still trying to find source of the problem even got another 1.6 engine with 100k fsh that never used this much oil

From what i can see it is leaking from the rocker cover gasket so i'll get that replaced. Its certainly not burning oil as there's no tell tale signs or smells and no leaks on the driveway either

I didnt know you had a Skoda Gareth!!

Hi, it's quite apparent if related to the rocker cover & must be fairly bad based on what you've described. Fairly easy/cheap to do & I'll get round to doing mine if it gets any worse ;)

Yeah Helen's got a Felicia but we're looking at changing it for a diesel (not sure which make) as she now works at the Trafford centre so a tank of petrol is only lasting a week so she wants a diesel like my Mondeo
