When ignition off radiator fan comes on and flattens battery

Featured Replies

Skoda octavia fl 59 plate "s"

My car started fine 1st thing yesterday from cold but when I parked it up for a few hours on my return the battery was flat. RAC came out and started it no problem and did a few tests and said I must have left something on but all was ok now (I know nothing was left on). A few hours of driving, everything seemed fine and I switched off to get a sandwich and on return to my car the radiator fan was running and when the ignition was switched back on it went off. I did several tests myself and that was the problem every time which clearly was draining the battery very quickly. I checked the fuse box under the bonnet to find a relay was clicking very fast, if I touch it the fan would come on and off with different pressure from my finger. The relay is part number 7M0 951 253 A and has the number 100 on top of it. I pulled the relay out over night and the battery was fine this morning and started 1st time after replacing the relay, ive not tried to start it without the relay.

Is it likely the relay is faulty or perhaps water has got under the fuse box to cause the relay to react like this, we've had so much rain and a lot of roads have been flood while I've been driving.

Any help and advice would be appreciated

That is very admirable diagnosis! I would bet that the relay is in fact the problem. I would advise you to locate a relay and if within a reasonable distance go straight there, buy it, and fit it pronto. I can't see a problem with driving it there; refit the relay, and providing you remove it as soon as you arrive (in case there is a queue at the parts counter - lol) you should be OK. Good luck!

Pete

I have exactly the same problem, we think its the fusebox, its very damp so going to give it a good clean and see where we go from there...

Have also done a vagcom check and there are no fault codes,

I've had 3 flat batterys on a brand new battery so hopefully get it fixed this time, its not fun having a flat battery at 5 o clock in the morning !

Studmuffin; is that same relay clicking? Have you tried to replace it?

Im sure you know this but not all batteries are made equal make sure the cold cracking value is high enough and its a VAG aproaved battery.

I used a bosch blue S4 4year garanteed. Other thing is the fans will run for 10mins even after you turn off the engine if its doing a DPF regen. If the

battery had not got fully charged due to cold and being recently jump started it could be that it just didn;t have enough power to start.

On my Ex Octavia Vrs the fan would run on for quite a long time after the Engine was turned off. It turned out that the High Pressure Sensor for the Air Con was faulty, new sensor problem solved.

Hi All,

this is a known fault with water entering the fusebox and causing a short. All VW range is affected. Make sure your fusebox lid is fitted correctly. This happened to me and the local independent VW dealer said he has several in a week with this problem. my fusebox lid was not on properly. They took the fusebox apart and showed me the water in the bottom.Hope this helps.

Ive ordered a new relay to see if that sorts it but today while driving the coil light has started blinking:-(

OMG! Now engine management light....dealers im guessing now, it must be all linked!

Im sort of hoping its a pint of water under the fuse box but i know i know....thats so wishful thinking:-(

I had pretty much the same issue a few years ago with my S3

At least u have picked it up quickly I only really noticed mine after I came home one night after a night out and it was running battery drain faults can be pain in arse to find usually

Holy thread revive Batman!

Just wanted to tag on to the end for other's benefit. I experiened a similar issue whereby the under-bonnet fusebox was clicking furiously with the engine off for no apparent reason. There have also been random instantaneous power drops during driving which I attirbute to this issue also.

The source was the relay inside the fusebox which looks like a large cube with the number 100 on it to part number 7M0951253A (I believe that number has changed now if you buy a new part). I believe the relay to be something to do with the fuel pump but could be wrong.

I replaced this but the problem clicking still persisted. The actual cause was water getting into the fusebox and short circuiting goodness knows what. Upon inspection there was actually extensive corrosion across the entire circuit board meaning water had gotten in some time ago. Solution was to purchase a second hand fuse box (came from a Golf actually, but they're all the same luckily) for £15 and replace the circuit board bit. I've made sure the fusebox lid is on properly and water-tight.

Fingers crossed, all solved.

I have a similar problem, skoda agents just changed the remote key battery..... and told me to come back if my car doesnt start again (obviously happened again).  An VW expert told me to check the 100 relay 7M0951253A and I had 2 in the fuse box so i swapped them round and working well.  I obviously wanted to replace it so I went to skoda agent but they couldnt find the part number, they ordered with the 'ew' number but it doesn't match.

I m looking to buy 2 (Malta) any idea from were I can get a couple?
