I was thinking of buying an ipad around xmas time, I own a mac book but it is suffering the strains of family life.

I am by no means an apple fan boy, have always had pc's since the days of 386's but in recent years became frustrated by poor build quality of pc laptops.

I keep seeing ad's for android tabs for around £150 which seems a good deal but what are they like to live with? I have 2 android phones (HTC/SAMSUNG) and find them both nice to use but am unsure how well the OS ports to a larger device?

Anyone have a droid tab??

Made my laptop obsolete in days.

Not a fan of apple stuff after my daughters iPhone 4s decided to develop a bad habit for data usage - 2.7Gb a month at last count - had to move onto unlimited data contract just to curb the costs, Apple shop had no idea why this was happening.

Also I used to work as a support engineer for Microsoft products, so didn't fancy starting again.

I had my tablet last Christmas, there are probably some better spec one's on the market now as it is Android 2.2 operating system, which is one of the older one's now.

Only thing I would say is check out the storage / expandability of storage as some tablets can be limiting in that department. Not with the one I have 250Gb drive acts as an external drive for a pc / laptop with one touch - a very good function

Nexus 7 here. Had it about 3 weeks and loving it. Small size suits me as I use it to access the 'net and read ebooks when travelling with work. Don't use it much at home as I am just as happy to sit at my desktop while SWIMBO watches endless soaps!

SWIMBO has an iPad which I positivly hate!

I also use a kindle at home for ebooks. This is lighter and easier on the eyes than the tablet but don't see the point of taking both away with me and the kindle app on the tablet synchronises the pages

If you can stretch your budget just a little then the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1" ( with the £50 cash back from Samsung ) can be had for £190.

My wife just got one to replace her Blackberry Playbook / Laptop. Never looked back. Great bit of kit for the sofa surfer at a great price.

trouble is I dont like Samsungs software updating or support.

Old man has a Nexus 7 and loves it. Even my Mum who has never got the concept of a mouse can work the touch screen.

I'm still unsure what to get as the samsung is only a little cheaper than an ipad and there is not mention of this £50 cashback which from what I have read is not a simple process to claim.

That said the droid does seem like a viable alternative to apple.

I have a nexus 7 . Like it a lot but so far still trying to work out how to read a USB stick on it (easy on a lap top)and how to connect it to my printer (also easy on a lap top) . Also the nexus doesn't want to play at blue toothing even with a samsung phone.

My iPhone 4s seems invisible too every thing too.

ifd your printer is wireless you should be able to print from the Nexus without a cable.

Thanks for above info! Will invest in the cable and app for reading USB files. My printer has WiFi so need to figure out how to turn it on lol !

Currently waiting for the Ployer Momo11 Talent to come out here... was originally looking at a Momo11 Bird with IPS screen and then a dual core Momo11 Speed but the latter has already been superseded by the Talent with Retina screen. Ployer tend to get great reviews apart from the odd, easily fixed wifi issue...

ANother vote for the nexus 7, I have a Xoom of my own but work recently kitted us out with nexus 7s and the smaller size really seems to work better, especially if you're out travelling. And USB on the go cable means you can expand the storage.

I'm on my archos 101 g9. Love hate thing going on here. Its amazing value for money but iv had to send it away due to a charging issue and think its gonna be going away again for the same reason. The first time before I sent it a had it on charge for 12 hours to get from 10% battery to wait for it...............

The bloke on the phone said I would not believe how meny they have to fix for this fault. It now takes about 6 hours for an empty to full charge. A little longer than the 4 it says in the book but I can cope with it as long as it doesn't get any worse.

If you get one make sure its the one with the separate charging port not the one that uses a mini USB to charge as that do not have this problem.

I think its the 250g hdd ones.

Well the Ployer Momo11 Talent isn;t going to be available here this side of Christmas so I've just taken delivery of a Momo11 Bird. Impressed so far with build quality, screen and speed etc... Just need to sort a couple of settings out and get rid of a few Chinese apps (good job I have someone in my team who is Chinese and can translate for me!)

Well got the tablet all up and running and all seems fine - works really well bar a slight issue on wifi that I've sorted (apparently they can be a bit random where they install the aerial so I opened the case, moved it to a better spot and then soldered in a long piece of wire and some foil aerials around the outside of the case to beef the reception up. Worked a treat.

Anyhow - SWMBO is chuffed and has a load of apps downloaded but I'm slightly concerned regarding password security etc. for log-ins onto websites etc. (both app based and general internet)... Can anybody recommend pukka anti-virus and malware apps that actually scans stuff rather than just checking software against a database?

Also any suggestions regarding back-ups (it seems to have a partitioned drive and back-up software installed.

On android shouldnt be a problem. So far every malware scare has been on apps purchased from a pirated developer. AVG is possibly the first port of call for android malware protection though if you are concerned.
