problem with car getting me down... cant find the problem ?

Featured Replies

hey everyone im hoping someone on here has had the same issue and have managed to solve it..

im a taxi driver and i rent the car. im only new to the job and have had the car for about 5 months... when i first got the car it was driving brilliantly smooth felt great to drive and i felt comfortable driving it.

but now there is a problem with the car that i have a hard time trying to explain to a mechanic and i have had the car checked and nothing has been found to be out of place.

the problem is the car at the fron end doesnt feel right.. the feeling im getting and i may be wrong is that it sometimes feels like it is sitting lower/flat tyre on one side... but it doesnt just stay on the one side, it shifts from left to right and so on... ive looked at the car and it doenst visably look like it is sitting that much lower maybe a tiny bit.

the problem happens when im driving and im turning or going left or right and hit any slight bump in the road, it then seems to shift something and make the car feel lower on one side, if i then hit another bump it may shift it too the other side or shift it back into feeling fine to drive.....

i have checked tyre pressure, new tyres, tracking done.... mechanics have checked my car and everything seems to fine ???

any idea ?#

thanks

If you park on a slope, with the handbrake on and an uneven load distribution in the car (eg 2 passengers), that could lead to one corner sitting a shade lower when they get out.

The other possibilites I can see are a broken spring right on an end (but that would "twang" at the front), or a worn top mount.

thanks for the reply,... the reason i didnt think it was a suspension or shock issue is that it moves about sits lower on right then with a bump or so it will shift to the other side... then other times itll knock back into place and feel fine when im driving its really got me stumped... the car doesnt pull.

My money is on the shocks, a wear item on high mileage cars.

Check for any fluids leaking from the shocks and try pushing down on the front wings of the car to see how it behaves, the suspension should lower and rise when you release and a single fluid movement, it it continues to fall and rise a few times then the shocks are dead.

Also as above, check the springs, the pig tails are renowned for snapping off but mainly on the rears.

The only other thing to consider is the suspension bushes, these often look OK during a visual inspection but can in fact be well worn.

Have you tried checking the ARB bushes, your drop links and the Wishbone bushes, particularly the rear console bushes.

If you feel one side is dropping lower then the other then maybe it is a good idea to carry a tape measure with you, measure from the ground up to the wheelarch on both sides when the car feels normal and then do so again if you feel one side drops. Not totally accurate or scientific I know but it may give you an idea or reassurance that all is well.
