common rail with no compression

Featured Replies

Hi I was wondering if anybody here has had a problem with a 2009 Octavia VRS with the common rail 2.0 diesel engine in?

It has been brought to me as the owner says shw was driving at night and heard a horrible noise and next thing the engine cut out. We have done a compression check which showed no compression on 3 cylinders and about 5bar on the other cylinder.

We have removed the inlet manifold to find it all full of carbon and looking down towards the valves we could see more thick carbon. The head has been removed to remove the debris but nothing inside appears to be damaged to cause the loss of cpmpression.

Has anybody else heard of this?

Any help would be really helpful

Dave

I hate jumping to conclusions but...

  • 5 year old diesel
  • lady driver
  • light right foot
  • excessive carbon build-up

Sorry I can't help with the diagnosis but is it too late for an 'Italian tune-up'!?

Petrol instead of diesel.?

[*]5 year old diesel

Even if it was a very early 2009 I can't make it to 5 year old?

It was full of the correct fuel and wouldn't even start or attempt to start. I have the issue of how can you lose compression on all cylinders at the same time and whilst driving along?! All the timing and everything was checked and double checked and it was perfect and all parts turn as they should.

It is just like the old diesels when the inlet flap would jam shut but we've found nothing like that on this one as all flaps are in the open position.

Take it you've checked the egr and anti shudder valve?

Are you sure it's a cr and not a pd? If a pd injectors could have gone but you,d wonder where the compression went still.

It's probably too late now the head is off, but running compressed air into the cylinders and listening at the crankcase breather and manifolds can help nail down what isn't sealing.

Sill question perhaps but maybe your compression gauge is goosed?

Horrible noise, engine cutting out, won't start (do you mean won't turn over at all?), but head looks OK. Could that be a seized crankshaft? No piston movement = no compression?

Yes it is one of the first Common rail diesels to appear. We checked all valves and everything turns and moves as it should kincluding the crankshaft. I've been told possible pistons but I don't see how they could all fail at the same time.

The engine did turn over on the starter with the typical sound of no compression. I'll be looking at it again on tuesday to try and get to the bottom of it and I just have a feeling it's going to be something really stupid and simple that I've over looked somewhere and I'm going to be kicking myself over it all. Taking the head off was a nightmare on the common rail. I much prefer the PD unit anytime.
