What is wrong? Skoda Octavia VRS

Featured Replies

Afternoon chaps

Just purchased a 03 Rs, all runs fine but I noticed something a minute ago.

When starting the car, there is this strange noise, what only I can discribe as a rubbing/grinding sound, which lasts around 1 second when i start the car.

It runs fine, no issues, but i'm a little worried as to this sound.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like it could be the starter motor sticking.

or belt slipping...need to record it if you want peeps to comment

Or something funny with the secondary air pump - so that's 3 replies and 3 different possibilities; as G-slave says we need to hear it.

I'll get a recording

Are these major problems I should worry about?

No none of the above are serious really although that doesn't mean it's not something else that is.

Im going with sticking starter though, seems to be something VW could never get right

Iv got an 01 plate, starter is doing exactly the same.... will get around to fixing it but really cannot be bothered lol

are you sure its not the fuel pump priming the system when you put the ignition on? it sounds like a cat being sat on!!!

The starter sticking noise sounds a like when people hold they key for too long in the start position. It's the gear on the starter not coming away from the flywheel instantly and it sounds pretty much like that. (This sounds most likely) The SAI and Belt noises would usually last longer than a second.

If you want, you could try roll starting the car to see if it still makes the noise when not engaging the starter. Only if you're comfortable doing so.

Search youtube for 1.8t starter noise. I'm sure there's something on there

You nailed it there I think mate.

Thanks for easing my worries, will sleep better tonight lol

?????

I have this issue also. But only since I had my new G60 flywheel + VR6 clutch kit fitted.

It only sometimes happens, just a small grinding noise on startup.

So if it's nothing to worry about that's good.
