Castrol Edge 5w40 too thick or okay?

Featured Replies

Since i ****** my sump the oil is obviously going to need changed, i got hold of 5Litres ages ago on sale for £3 each in wilkos and stock piled it.

Is this oil okay for my 05 VRS?

Any one else used it in their VRS?

I did have petronsas 5000V 5w30 seemed to guzzle it a little.

Thanks

The normal oil is 5w 40 too, but it is specifically 505.01 marked as suitable for PD engines. If yours isn't marked as such, don't use it!!

does it meet VW spec 505.01 or 507.00? If yes then it's fine, if not baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad idea.

castrol edge tdi has the 505.01 spec but the castrol edge fst without the tdi logo is 505.00 and is not suitable, clearly written on the back in the black area. I think the 505.00 one has a red cap too.

Cheers lads, it has this on the bottle

VW 502 00 / VW 505 00

No good?

I must admit this was bought for my other car hoping it would be okay in the VRS.

That's no good mate, fine for pre pd but not pd, as said 505.01 or 507.00 is what you need, the stuff you bought, that's the stuff with the red cap yeah?

I put it in the boot, but i think its a red cap.

Good job i asked!

I'll have to get some castrol edge from Asda as its cheaper there, would prefer to try some good fully synth stuff @ 5w40, if anyone can recommend any good stuff at good prices?

Cheers for that mate.

Have a look at this list of all the approved oils for the PD 130 vRS - 505 01 or 507 00 is what it needs to have on the bottle, 507 00 is the later spec which exceeded the previous 505 01.

thankjs mate

Try GSF or TPS or Opie Oils (sponsor on here)

Main dealer quantum platignum. 5w40 and pd safe, quite cheap too, if you haggle 25 quid for 5 litres, get your sump plug and new filter there too.

Mines been run on 5w30 507 spec oil for practically all of it's 142.5k miles, Shell Helix ultra extra on the last service. Barely uses a drop of oil.

I have castrol edge 5w40 FST and mine is 505.01

My bets are it has a black cap and tdi written on it too? If not it'll be an older stock.

You MUST use the correct oil in a Pumpe Duse engine or asking for trouble. Not worth economising on such an important part of running a car.

Try the dealer for Quantum as mentioned above, sometimes quite good prices!

Yeh black cap and turbo diesel stuff, you worried me at first but I knew I wouldn't have bought it at the time lol

It's the camshaft that demands the oil, it's an unusual engine as the fuel injectors are pumped by the a cam. If you google pd cam wear you will see why you need decent oil!

Ive always used Quantum from the dealers and its been as cheap or cheaper than anything else of the correct spec.
