ABS light and Traction Light wont go out

Featured Replies

Car was fine, always had light on in the middle (was told it was a brake pad sensor)

but on the way home it started snowing, and all of a sudden my dash lit up like an xmas tree (pretty small xmas but still)

the ABS light and Traction light came on, car stops fine, but the lights stayed on even when staionary, and even when I took the keys out and restarted it,

does this mean im looking at another bill to get it fixed, and will it be safe driving it like this for the time being

I'd take it steady for a few days use the gears to slow down and get it scanned on vag com possibly a funked sensor

+1, get it checked for fault codes, as mentioned, more than likely a speed sensor gone west.

3rded; it's almost certainly a failed speed sensor, so you presently have no, repeat no antilock or traction control. You need a VCDS scan to find out which one is the problem.

As said above, get it scanned. I had the same thing happen to me, although on a Fabia, and it turned out some wiring had been cut by something. Stuck it back together with butt connectors and all lights went out. The scan had shown front right abs sensor, so i only found the wiring when i took the wheel off to investigate and clean up the sensor.

thx guys, I will get it scanned,

I see somewhere there was a thread about where I could get my car done scanned by VAG, I cant find the post though, does anyone know where it is, and could direct me..

Could be the cable to speed sensor on NSF has broken

im hoping its something easy and cheap... cars costing far to much in maintenance.. stopping me from modding lol

The thread listing members with VCDS is below. The second link is a map of VCDS owners. You will see that there is one in Durham, ie aham_uk.

thx checked out the local ones and seems none have been on lately... will a normal garage be able to do it, or would i be looking at going to a Skoda or VW dealers

Small update aswell... just went out and traction control has come back, and now only the ABS light light is permanently on... I have tried searching and some people have had ABS problems and turned out to be a fuse. does anyone think this could be the problem here ?

A fuse is possible; fusebox is RHS of dash, and link to pdf manuals is in the sticky threads on page 1.

Click that, and you'll get to another thread that contains links to PDF copies of the Octavia manuals. Download the relevant manual and searth that for fusebox.

I tried that page yesterday, just tried again today, and it appears whatever was there is no longer available, I got some Czech message and a 404 on the page, translated via google says "Sorry, the page you requested was not found on this server."

so looks like im out of luck on that one

Spot on mate thx

wasn't the fuse

But I have just remembered when I took the car to VW to have the coil pack fixed under warranty they did a check on the car, and said my my ABS Sensor and brake pad Sensor wiring on N/S/F is insecure,

so im guessing this could of become worse, the snows cleared today so should be able to make it to the garage to get it checked over..

Sounds like it could be easily rectified :) good luck buddy

I just took car to the garage, as I pulled into the road with the garage on, the ABS light went out, I was hoping for an easy fix, but that was better than expected,

still took it to the garage as I wanted another job doing, they took car for a test drive and said brakes are working fine. and he suggested water or snow could of been on the sensor, and now its dried off the ABS is working again

although he seemed reluctant to look any further.

He's probably correct, but this means the ABS could fail again just when you need it most. The fault code will still be in memory.

Hopefully if was just snow/ice on the sensor but as Ken says, it could go again and at a more important time. Probably better to insist they check it properly and hope for a cheap solution. Always typical the light goes out as you're going to the garage though. :D

yeah, trying to explain that to them, they looked at me as if I was mad...

but I think I will find a better garage as I kept asking and they kept sweeping passed the issue,
