This is what happens when you turn a blind eye to 1 small problem

Featured Replies

Ok ive owned my octy 2003 plate 1.9tdi 130 for 6 months or so now.

When i first got the car the gears where crunching, which i now know to be the gear linkages (sorted that)

Then the sunroof leaked which i left and thought ill sort it when i can be bothered

Then the aircon refused to blow cold air. Again i thought sod it its cold enough ill sort it in the summer

Then the rear wiper stopped working, now im getting annoyed so i decided i would look into it and do everything on my week off.

BUT now the big problems have arrived the engine is verrryyyy noisy on idle and make a hell of a clunk when i turn it off. The battery light is on on my dash and the gears are crunching again. Im at my witts end with this car. Its only done bloody 56k with FSH. WHAT A JOKE

Define verrryyyyy noisy. Are we talking diesel knock?

What's the oil level like?

EGR clean? ASV working? If the ASV isn't working, then the engine will shudder when you turn it off...

Its not diesel knock. It started 4days ago but i work and havent had the time to check anything out. Its almost like a misfire but when it does it just seems to clunck very loud. But if i give it even a little rev it goes away??

The misfire will be one thing.

The clunk? Chances are when it misfires the engine moves and you get a clunk from that. Possible suspects would be the engine mounts and the dogbone mount to make sure they're not broken.

The misfiring when cold will more than likely be the timing being out.

Ok mate thanks will have a look tomorrow. Ive got a day off work so it looks as if it wont be a lazy day for me lol... Ive just had a peek at that brisky run you've got going on there.... Seems a great idea. Do you know how long it will last and the sort of mileage involved?

At first it was looking like about 1500 miles - but I reckon because of other constraints it'll probably go down to about half that tops and instead be a bit of a coast to coast route with small stop-offs over the Scottish border and Welsh coast thrown in.

Battery light = knackered battery, duff alternator, high resistance in alternator wiring, issues with the aux belt/tensioner, freewheel pulley

Timing out - how is general performance?

My guess is that there isn't really a misfire - it just sounds like that. My guess would be the aux belt tensioner. They make a clunk just before they start to come apart and often don't last long if the alternator/pulley has gone.

Your car is a PD, so I doubt the timing is a problem unless you have the engine management light on.

I had a similar problem on my 2.0tdi Touran, it turned out to be the pulley on the alternator, this is a special clutch mechanism which smooths the running on tick over. When it starts to fail the car will sound much noisier (rattling) on tick over, when I changed mine it made the world of difference, costs about £30.00, so might be worth a try. If aux belt tensioner is moving around a lot on tick over there is a good chance the pulley is starting fail, it will also have an effect on the mpg of the car.

Mine started making a noise and then broke off.... :-( I had to get a lowloader home!

My old 1.9tdi used to knock its tits off on idle and switch off and I occasionally got the battery light that was due to the tensioner on the aux belt being funked so I replaced it and then problem solved

The performance isnt too bad really. The gearbox isnt great thought so im double de clutching at the moment to help reducee pressure when i change

Well people its 2 weeks before xmas and i now have to shell out a big roll of money because the "reputible" garage i bought my car off, changed my knackered gearbox but didnt bother doing the DMF. A beautiful 800 quid bill and i may have just died inside
