time to call it a day

HI All,

Just thought I would drop a post on here to say goodbye and good luck, I've had some really helpful information from the forum over the last two years since ordering my Superb 4x4 TDi 170 Elegance estate.

I like the car and it has grown on me apart from one major part....the drivers seat, as you have all probably seen me posting I've had so much trouble with the comfort that it got to the point where I can't drive it anywhere without always having the heated seats on and feeling crippled when I got there. I constantly get a pain in my back and now the dead bum syndrome a lot of people have reported, I've had it into my local Skoda dealer who claim nothing is wrong with the car. I'm guessing the seats are maybe too firm for my back.

I've tried every seating configuration known to man, I've changed it so many times I now don't know what's normal and also tried the changes based on the recommended driving position that someone posted on here.

As a theory I test drive several other cars and used my wives car for a couple of days and didn't get any issues at all.

Here are the cars I looked at

  • Focus ST estate (fun but a bit to boy racer for my liking plus would cost a bomb to run)
  • New Hyundai Santa Fe - Too high to get the dogs in and a bit cheap inside considering it was 33k for the Model i wanted.
  • New Mazda 6 Sport Auto Nav Tourer - In a word stunning!!! they got it in the show room today and it's a massive jump forward (2.2 175bhp diesel emitting only 127g of co2 , well built and really comfortable with tons of gadgets.

Subject to wives approval I'm off to place the order tomorrow at the dealer, pictures don't do it justice but here's one anyway. Will be using the Superb for part Ex so if anyone wants a high spec Superb for a good price let me know.

How much was the ST estate being discounted by? I suspect there is a fair bit of margin to play with in these just now, and some of that may have been used to inflate your trade-in offer

And I hope that Mazda have fixed their 2.0 / 2.2 diesel reliability issues..... just saying......

As a fellow Basingstokeian I am sorry to hear the news about the problem with the seats. I did suffer at first but eventually found a comfortable position and am now fine even with a journey down to Spain under the belt. Will be looking out for the red Mazda in the near future. Good luck.

The ST was just an outside idea for combining a bit of fun and practicality, given mpg, residual value and being over priced I decided against it. The fact they gave me an rep quote pretty much killed any chance they had of my business.

As for the mazda they have good ratings for reliability from what I've read, the 2.2 has been fine in the cx5 so I will take a chance , every car has gremlins. I regularly see people commenting on DPF, Columbus dying etc which is unfortunate, every brand has it issues.

Thanks superbrex, look forward to seeing you around p.s. what colours your superb will keep en eye out.

i wish i could change mine as well,

Exactly the same as you, love the car to bits, but its now becoming un-bearable.

Ive tried every seat position there is, no joy.

ive tried cushions pillows, the lot ! , still no joy.

My back is in agony everytime i drive it, ive only had my elegance for around 6 months, but i cant afford to trade in,

I'll need to wait to half term, and hand it back ( anothewr 2 years to go :( )

ive drove my wifes car for the last 2 days, and no pain, but i need to drive mine again tomorroow, which im now dreading.

im going to buy a cheap run around for now, and leave the skoda in the drive for a while.

Ive bought new skoda's since the first octavia came out, and i feel let down by skoda's attitude towards the seats.

i wish you all the best mate on your new car, even though, im jealous !

A lot of folks respect Honest John's opinions...... http://www.honestjoh...section=bad???? Follow link and click on 'What's Bad'

Again, only saying. I would happily buy a VAG diesel, but not a Mazda 2.0/2.2..

Thanks for the heads up,I believe that's the old model Mazda 6 only, the new 2.2 is the one they introduced in the cx5

Your welcome. I wasn't aware they had a new 2.2 - don't think I've even seen a cx5 - I know a couple of folks with a CX-7, but they're both petrol.

New Mazda 6 certainly looks a lovely car - wonder how much it has in common with the 2013 Mondeo? Maybe not a lot; previous model ranges had more in common.

Apparently nothing in common any more as they don't share parts anymore with Ford.

The new sky active designs they are producing are winning lots of awards, so worth a try. I've done a lot of the premium brands, looked at the New bmw 320d m sport tourer, not very impressive at all and massively overpriced.

The mazda looks nice, it's got great mpg figures and low emissions, but, no 4x4, smaller boot, no towing limits listed and it looks like a homolgated vehicle (looks the same as all the other saloons and estates around). The same thing is happening with the SUV/soft roaders they are all getting smaller !! Just when we all need more space and they are becoming homolgated.

Anyway, that's slightly OT, it's a shame that the seat doesn't fit your back but understandable if you can't stand it, I've had back problems on and off, not due to car seats, although some are worse than others, given my troubles over the years I find the seat in my Superb to be pretty good comfort wise.

There must be a bad batch of seats out there.

Hi Derek

I have the same problem with my left knee/leg and its getting worse. I have a limp at times and I am waiting to see a consultant about my knee. I cant afford to change either I bought a new Greenline in 09 and changed to a 170 Elegance in 10. I had a Octavia VRS 06 from new before my Suprebs and never had a problem great car. I love my Superb but I cant keep going on the way I am I will end up in a wheelchair.

Do you know if anyone emailed/phoned Skoda about this issue ?? I am thinking of doing so and see what they could do with me for an Auto Superb or do people driving the DSG box have the same problems ???

Oh and I did not hurt my knee/leg in anyway ie sports etc.

Del.

Mine is the dsg model, I can't figure it out, I thought with pillows etc, would cure it, but no avail.

I tried two different dealers, not interested in the slightest.

I've never had arse problems or back problems prior to this car.

I have a cappuccino twindoor, a few of around in Basingstoke but I am the youngest of the drivers!

i wish i could change mine as well….

Del if it giving you that much grief then give a serious amount of thought into fitting a Recaro Orthopaedic seat, now I will the 1st one to admit that this is not a cheap option (over a grand) BUT what you will have is one of the most comfortable and fully adjustable seat on the market, you can also refit the seat to other cars (the subframes are interchangeable allowing you to do this), in doing so get true VFM out of it.

HI All,

I'm back, as most of you may have heard I left in December to get the new Mazda 6 tourer. After constant delays and stalling on my order followed by a factory recall of the Mazda 6 I cancelled my order, the Mazda is sat somewhere in Germany awaiting parts from Japan that were on back order with no ETA.

As they breached the contract the dealer has cancelled and given me my deposit back, funnily enough I was starting to regret the decision to trade in the Superb. I was looking at cars this week and couldn't find anything that really made me want to part with my money to be honest, looked at the new BMW 3 series M sport tourer and I have never been so dissapointed in a car for the money. 5 Series was more then I wanted to spend.

The back problems aren't as bad as they were but it's still not perfect so I'm going to give it another few months.

I've just ordered a brand new set of Hankook tyres and taxed it for another year so I will be sticking with her to the end of my hire contract at least, it really is a good well specced out car for the money I spent.

Sorry to hear you had trouble with the new car. good that the dealer gave you your money back.i dont have that option as i have already sold my superb, only in the autotrader for one week sold too the first caller for the asking price.

i am having to wait till end of may for my new black mk2 ford kuga with all the toys again.the wait will give you more time to look round for the next car

Good to see you back.

I fixed the dead right leg / sore right bum cheek problem on my Superb by removing the plastic trim on that side of the seat. Under it is a metal bar that keeps the plastic in position. That bar is the problem as it prevents the cushion from spreading when you sit on it and so the cushion digs into your bum and leg. Using brute force I pulled the bar outwards by about 15mm and then refitted the plastic. There is now a small gap between the plastic and the seat that you can get your fingers in. That gap alows the seat to spread and for me the problem completely went away.
