Bushes

Can someone please explain whats behind uprated bushes? Why would you need to upgrade in the first place and is it even worth spending the money to have them done, heard that upgraded causes alot of rattling, not sure about that already got a rattle from the dash that i cant seem to work out whats causing it, does it alot when setting off slowly, just vibrates like hell.

You don't need uprated bushes really, replacing with ones from the dealer will make the car "as new". Harder bushes can keep a firmer hold on suspension parts which may help with keeping everything in line over bumps etc. so for a more sporty feel that might have put people off if the car came like it from the factory you can change to harder bushes. For comfort I would stick to standard parts.

It's well worth the expense to improve handling if you drive your car. If not, it's not really worth it.

I have powerflex wishbone bushes but had my car on coilovers without them also and the difference is night and day.... I also don't find them uncomfortable at all, although you will tell the difference

Im getting lowered on coilovers was just thinking about getting them done at the same time if i needed to, but if i dont then the money can be spent somewhere else

It certainly all adds up, but if I'm going to do it, it's worth doing properly IMO

You could have a look at checking the dogbone bush which is the mount that transmits the forward and backwards motion of the gearbox to the chassis.

I would ask the garage to have a look at this and the other bushes and see what they think, if they are in good condition then leave them be.

By the way a lot of this will be dependent on how many miles the car has done.

Just reached 58k, dogbone bush, could be that the cause of the vibrating dash? Its doing it on idle now :/

It's one possibility. It's quite a low mileage I would think the bushes would be ok. I know that people who have fitted hard bushes to the dogbone mount complain of lots of vibration. That's what made me think of it. I would have a look at the engine with the bonnet up and see if it's moving about.

If it was the dog bone mount you would know.... Had mine go as I pulled away from a junction, very loud bang and really felt unsafe to drive, like the engine was gonna drop out the bottom, then opened the engine bay I thought the engine was gonna jump at me and eat me!

With bonnet open everything seems normal, it really only started when i had a miltek cat back fitted, but when i had it up on the ramp everything seem to look ok apart from my downpipe looked very close to the beam that runs across under it

When you have to replace your console bushes you replace them with uprated Powerflex items to avoid having to do them again. They're easier to install and inexpensive but have a lifetime guarantee. My local mechanic has done 4 sets of OE bushes on one car, next time he's recommending Powerflex to the owner.

Uprated poly bushes are a worth while thing especially if you're running lowered suspension.
