Manlier Horn (the beep beep type...)

Featured Replies

With increased drives to London and facing the more aggressive drivers, I've come to notice my fabia is very effeminate when it comes to honking those who cut me up. Borderline embarrassing. It was okay to pass the MOT, mind you....just sounds feeble now that I've had to use it more.

Are there any models which come with louder, lower pitched ones which could be a direct swap if I scrounged around some scrapyards? I've read mixed reviews about the aftermarket Stebel ones, although they seem to be harder to come by nowadays...

Is changing the horn a three-spanner-or-less jobbie (as per Haynes classification) or is it trickier?

As ever, many thanks in advance to you folk.

Very simple job, Stebel clones aren't great but the reliability of the genuine stuff isn't amazing either. For bikes I tend to stick to the acumen? kits as they don't have any delay (no compressor) and are reasonably loud.

I know how you feel.....I once had a Renault 5 with a total embarrassment for a horn (girly sounding beep beep) It was so bad I didn't bother honking people as it used to make me visibly cringe.

You want to try and get a two tone "honk" style horn. Not sure what after market horns would give you this effect, but I think the Stebel horns sound a bit naff.

Maybe if anyone could recommend an old car with a great horn, you could go to the scrapyard and find one.

Thanks for the replies, guys....I'm glad I'm not the only one in this situation! That video was epicly hilarious!!

It's the reliability of the genuine Stebels that put me off....I read some people's complaints on another forum about how they packed up after a year or so. Presumably an acumen kit could be made to fit in a car?

Yes! That's exactly how I felt when I was cut up...then cringed at the sound my fabia was making. I'm holding out for recommendations on old cars I should target in the scrapyard.

Hmm...don't they have a compressor or something to get them pumping?

I'll keep an eye out for A3's being scrapped.....that's exactly what I would like: a "youve pi55ed me off you c***" horn....not that I'm an aggressive driver or anything!

Yeah, most trucks have air horns, which although can be fitted to a car, require a source of compressed air.

For the ultimate horn look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p08J06VKPAQ

Not cheap (about £350) or exactly road legal, but funny none the less!

For a sensible but louder (manlyer) horn get a pair of dual tone horns from mk4 golf/ a3/ passat/ bora/ mk5 golf etc etc.. they are pretty much all the same except the newer type (mk5 golf/ 3c passat onwards) have different connectors..

Changing the horn isn't too difficult. I wonder if it's a bumper off on some models without the tear-drop shaped fogs though. Swapping for something different might need some creativity making up a bracket and wiring etc..

Have a stebel full size and stebel compact fitted. Hardly use the horn though to be honest.
