Oil 5w40 vs 15w40

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Going to do an oil change on my vrs soon as its due one so I am looking at what oil to stick in. Looking about I have seen that 5w40 at 505.01 is the oil to go with but have also read that 15w40 with 505.01 spec is better for engine with high mileage which mine has.

Just wanted to confirm that 15w40 to vw 505.01 spec is going to be ok for my car/engine.

Thanks in advance.

The first number relates to viscosity from cold, the higher the number the thicker the oil, the second number is running temp viscosity, so basically for 90% of the time at running temp both oils are the same. All your doing with a 15w 40 is making it harder for the oil to get where it needs to go on a cold start - not a good thing!

Stick 5w40 proper oil in, if the high miles worries you, either reduce the service interval or buy expensive oil.

Thanks for the reply guys. Will go get some 5w40.

You can use 5W-30 long life oil or 5W-40 oil. Plus they have to meet (or exceed) VW 505.01 spec. Be aware that some 5W-40 don't meet the required VW standards.

I wonder if you miss-read the info and the 15W-40 meets 501.01 not 505.01.

i wondered this, there isnt a 501.01 15w40 is there?

ive always used 5w30 castrol, runs beautifully..

Google tdi cam wear, should scare you into buying the right oil!

I'm not sure why you would want 15w-40? Perhaps in a worn engine it might be uselful?

Tthe 15 weight means it wouldn't be great at being pumped around when cold, . Thicker does not automatically mean its better at protecting from wear, I think you have to look at the film strength (if I remember right). Having said that if you took 2 oils from the same manufacturer it stands to reason that the thicker grade of the same oil would be better, I would guess you would get less power/mpg but a longer life.

Looks like you can get 15w-50 if you want thicker oil:

In fact you can get a wide range, 10w-60 even:

5w30 shell helix

5w30 shell helix

+1

Mines currently running on Shell Helix ultra extra which meets the 507 spec

Surely bad going to 5w30 on a higher mileage car?

Why is that? The difference between 5w30 and 5w40 is minimal and a good quality oil will perform well inside the engine reducing wear and prevent sludge & engine deposits Mines been run on 5w30 507 spec oil most of it's life and it'll soon be on 143k. Checked the oil level yesterday and its still at the top of the dipstick 3000 miles after the last service, hasn't used a drop.

Just thought a thicker oil would be preferred on a higher mileage car?

Can't directly comment on a vRS, but for many years I've used 15w/40 in my Skoda's, formerly mineral and more recently semi-syn.

They've always run sweat on that but we are talking older, non turbo & typically higher mileage engines. ;)

I guess 507 is higher spec? Probably worth going on this rather than the weight.

Edit - Just found out that 507 is low ash for cars with a DPF so not really much point in using it over 505.01 unless someone knows better?

Edit again, 505.01 is for PD engines probably not a good idea to use 507 which is for the newer engines that don't have the PD cam wear problems, ie CR engines. The 507 is only a 5w30 weight oil not 5w40.
