Yeti suspension vs. B roads

Hello fellow forum members.

Last night I drove (once again) close to my home on what one would define as a B road. It is in a good overall condition,paved of course,but there is a section of it about three or four hundred yards long,that is not level.The soil has moved and shifted over the years and as one drives over the section my Yeti begins to roll and pitch like crazy and the feeling of the ride is like being in a fast boat on choppy water,if you know what I mean.(violent enough to spill coffee...)

Do you have roads like I have described in the area you live in and drive around in?

How well do you reckon the Yeti suspension deals with situations like this , or rather is it better compared to other makes? Do you think your Yeti suspension is superior to cars you have owned in the past?

One last Q, will 16" or 17" rims behave differently? Mine are 17.

Suspension can be quite harsh on the yeti but it stays composed...i think this is because the spring rates and damping are set also for good road handling. The yeti doesn't have active shocks so skoda compromised as best they could. It could be softer damped but then we'd all complain about the softness on road. That being said my yeti spends a fair bit of time on rough roads and unmade roads in Hampshire and i have got used to it...i have driven quite fast to see if it gets worst and it always seems composed....

Strange because I think it absorbs bumps superbly and takes everything in its stride without any nasty surprises, but guess it is what you are used to previously.

Totally agree, you want to try a Seat Altea Sport on 17" rims, it will knock your teeth out!

Overall I am pleased with the suspension,I am sure there is no suspension that will "iron out" all roads.

Suspension is always a compromise between ultimate ride comfort and ultimate handling. As standard the Yeti suspension is the best all round and least compromised of any car I've owned previously. :-)

Mine seems fine; holds the road well under all sorts of conditions with varying size of potholes! I have noticed the electric driver's seat absorbs shocks very well but they can be transmitted with full force through the steering?

Having said all that my previous car, a Passat Sport with lowered suspension and 235/45 tyres on 17" rims seemed far more composed??? :think:

We live in a village that is inundated with speed bumps and then the half mile track to my son's fields is an unadapted farmer's track which is nigh on impossible to negotiate if we have a lot of snow and is more used to tractors and combines travelling up and own it!

On top of that we don't stick to the best of roads when we're heading or he hills at weekends - so all in all I think the Yeti suspension has fared a lot better than the other cars we've had. The Citroen C4 exclusive we previously had just used to wallow about like a motor boat!!!

Reality is that Yeti have a hard and a little noisy suspension. I prefer more confort but...

And i have 16".

My Yeti has 17" wheels and for me the ride is much more forgiving than my previous Octavia vRS's (one on 17s, the later two on 18s).

It gives a smoother ride with the caravan too.

However having the same engine/performance as the vRS's the Yeti reminds you it is not quite as 'chuckable' on fast country roads when you forget!

That inch makes all the difference (so she said)

Well I have the far cooler 17inchers B) and live in an area renowned for it's cart track like road surfaces and will admit on occaisions the ride can be a little harsh but compared to the Suzuki SX4 we had before the ride is positively cushion like! I think it's all a matter of taste and how well you are upholstered in the buttock area.

The Yeti isn't in the BMW e39 5 series class for comfort. I had 2 and they were very comfortable and the suspension was spot on. The Yeti is built to a price and the components and R&D will not be in the same class as the BMW.

I do think it is pretty good for its own class though. At times it is a bit jittery, but that is a compromise we pay for for the good on road handling for such a 'tall' vehicle.

It is pretty good off road as well :lol:

I think you hit some particular rolling frequency that matched some suspension characteristic and set in a reinforcing motion. I had this on another tall car once (a Discovery on a UK B road) and the only solution was to slow down - in a hurry as it felt I was losing control of the car. Probably all cars have some such resonant frequency - and you are probably unlucky to have found it!
