Front Fog Light Dim

Featured Replies

Last week my driver's side front fog bulb blew/stopped working. Replaced it today, but after testing I noticed it was rather dimmer than usual, about 50% as bright as normal. I tried another new bulb with the same result. Am seriously considering changing the bulbs for LED CREE versions, but need the bulbs to be working properly before I do. After this week of rubbish weather and grit salt down on the road, I'm wondering if I have a bad earth now?? Is there any way I can check this in very basic terms please? i'm going to get the volt meter out and check the voltage going into the bulb, but if it is an earthing problem where is the earth mounting point please? Many thanks in advance guys ;o)

Just a quick add on to the above..all the other bulbs are working fine.,so high beam, side light, indicator and headlight are all ok..going to buy another bulb just in case I was unlucky enough to have bought two dodgy bulbs.

Are you sure it's not just looking 'Dim' because it now has the right type of bulb in it?

Hi Gaz

thanks for your reply.

The driver's side has a bog standard H3 bulb in it as does the passenger's side. But the driver's side is approximately 50% dimmer than the passenger side. up until the bulb blew it was 'normal' brightness.

Did speak to the mechanic at work, who is a Skoda specific mechanic, and he also drives a Superb, and he reckons it sounds like a bad earth, and my best bet is to whip the front bumper off and get the headlight unit out and check all the connectors and plugs for any signs of corrosion and to clean as required and check everything before I put it all back together. If I do decide to do to this I'll take the time time to replace the indicator bulbs too because they are the originals too.

Something for the weekend possibly???

Curious that it's happened with a bulb change, but yeah, without any other changes, I'd also suspect an earthing issue. Might be an idea to run a separate wire to a good ground - a change in the light then would be fairly conclusive as to it being a duff earth.

Can you get Cree fog light bulbs? I'd have thought a standard cree emitter would be far too white for fog.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I'm a relative newby and i've noticed with my front fogs that they go off when you switch the main beam on, i assume this is normal, but is there any way to modify them to keep them on?

Hello Mark - not sure why you'd want your fogs and mains on at the same time. Fogs are low, to get under the fog and have a wide soft beam pattern to give a better view of the road wherever possible. Your mains are higher off the ground and are design to have a much longer throw. If you're able to use your mains (i.e. the fog's not enough to reflect light back at you and thus reduce visibility) then you don't need your fog lights on.

In answer to your question, yes, I believe it's normal for them to go off when your mains are on.

Why would you want them to be on at the same time as the main beam?

They are intended for us in FOG in conjunction with dipped beams, at low speed to illuminate the area immediately in front of the vehicle without dazzling oncoming drivers.

If you are able to use full beam headlights without completely dazzling yourself it isn't foggy, therefore foglights are not needed.

Slightly off topic, but does someone know here the main beams are meant to point compared to the dipped lights? My driver side main beam points a bit more noticeabley to the floor. Want to adjust them. Dipped lights are perfectly aligned BTW.
