Weird noise on start up this morning

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Started my car this morning as normal and the engine pitch changed to a high pitched screech rather than the normal smooth ticking over. Wasn't lumpy or anything. Turned the climate and radio off, opened the window and the noise was there for around 15 more seconds then just stopped and everything seemed normal.

Also when I press the clutch in I get like a tapping noise - not loud, again pitch just changes, gone when clutch is released. Not sure if this has been there since I got the car, but after the other noise this morning I could hear everything lol.

It is a 2012 vRS TDi CR 170 with 8800 miles on the clock - anyone else had this before? Anything to worry about?

Thanking you muchly!

Is it an auxiliary drive belt (same sound as an old fanbelt) slipping and causing the screech or is it a different noise?

Could well be yes.

best take it to the dealer i think.

Take it no one else has had this on theirs then? Will see if it happens again, car still drives awesomely and it's only happened once so was just checking more than anything :)

Damp on the drivebelts does this. After washing mine does it occasionally.

That's what I have been told just now - will keep an eye on it.

Thanks everyone :)

Did you refuel day before?

  • Author

Nope, refuelled about 100 miles ago about a week ago.

Ok

But is it on the same refuel.

Last refuel = started the trembling in cold

No last noise was on different tank of diesel.

Any ideas, something in the alternator maybe? My dad had a similar issue apparently and it was grit or a stone that ended up in the alternator, but not really sure if this could be the same.

hi does your air con still work . i have heard this noise before on an audi a4 it turned out to be a knackered aircon compressor clutch

I'll double check but pretty sure it's ok. Also I turned off the climate and everything mad the noise was still there. Would it stop if you turned it off?

A/C is fine, no issues at all.

I'd be happy if my PD140 was as quiet as that. I'd not be worried but I'm no expert.

Mine does this too, only if the car has recently been washed/jet washed so put it down to the aux belt slipping with the moisture.

I think it is the pully on your alternator.
