BlackVue Power Magic - DIY?

Featured Replies

So ive received my blackvue today which is a cool bit of kit!

Now, before i wire it in, and use it to record just my driving, i have just seen the powermagic, which monitors voltage and shuts power when battery voltage gets too low when the engine is off (not interested about timer part) - awesome, this means i could use the blackvue to record when i park up without giving me a dead car upon return! This especially interests me as i leave my car out by/on the road at night and would like to monitor whats going on.

The power magic is ~£50, which is a lot of dosh, so was wondering (there must be!) a way to wire up something inline to cut power at a certain voltage? Im handy with a soldering iron and can pick up some stuff from Maplins etc, but dont have the know how to design something like this.

EDIT: it would be good to monitor when its getting a live ignition feed, and when its not also, so it can enter 'parking mode' correctly.

Any thoughts??

Doesn't parking mode enter automatically when no vibration is detected for a set period?

Yes, thats correct, but im worried about my battery getting drained and thought there must be a way to wire up something to keep an eye on the voltage and cut the power if it drops below the desired amount, 11.4v in the power magic's case.

I thought about this myself. My 380 gives off enough heat in park mode that I stopped using it that way and have it on an ignition switched fuse. When there's frost, there was a clear patch around the camera that screamed 'look at me!!!'

I found this thread on overclockers that includes a few circuit diagrams: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=861013

Yep.

The blackvue will drain the battery if left on in park mode.

I know. I have called out Skoda Assist to start the car, which we worked put was the blackvue draining the battery.

When left on in the ice & snow, there was a clear patch around the blackvue on the outside of the windscreen. The original ones give off a decent amount of heat.......
